Grown vs. Bought

True enough.

Also, he was only in the Mariners organization for ~2 years and ~165 IP.

Before becoming a true mainstay in the rotation from 2012 and beyond, he logged over 400 IP in the O's minor league system spanning 4 years.

Bottom line he wasn't some finished product waiting at AAA for a chance. 165 innings is nothing.

Eight other teams also passed over Scherzer and Lincecum. Only Tampa and the Dodgers hit. Seven of the first nine were disappointments to outright busts. Ancient history. Is there a point to bringing up Billy Rowell?

It's hard to forget the night Billy Rowell jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge

(although in reality it's only a 20-foot drop).

Agreed. The Mariners helped him get over his first big developmental hump. He still had plenty of work to be done when he entered the Orioles' system.

Grown

Kevin Gausman: 7-10, 3.58 ERA, 1.281 WHIP

Dylan Bundy: 8-5, 3.47 ERA, 1.324 WHIP

Chris Tillman: 15-5, 3.76 ERA, 1.268 WHIP

Total: 30-20, 3.60 ERA, 1.291 WHIP

Bought

Wade Miley: 1-3, 7.14 ERA, 1.655 WHIP

Yovani Gallardo: 4-7, 5.62 ERA, 1.618 WHIP

Ubaldo Jimenez: 5-11, 6.46 ERA, 1.798 WHIP

Total: 10-21, 6.41 ERA, 1.690 WHIP

Although this season did start with Tyler Wilson and Mike Wright in the five man rotation. They would also be under the Grown category.

I see more positive for our organization than negative with these numbers. Ubaldo, Miley and Gallardo will all be gone after next year. Hopefully we re sign Tillman or he will be too. Gausman and Bundy will be here about another 9 years combined. Next year we'll have our "big 3" then the rotation filled out with the vets pitching on expiring deals.

The hope should be that if we resign Tillman than we have are 1-2-3 slots set for years. We'd only need our internal options to be the 4th/5th starters they are projected to be.
