Boras, Orioles set to discuss Wieters extension

I know it is. But how often do catchers get pulled that late in the game? I just don't think the sample size is large enough to be meaningful.

IIRC, Greg Zaun did catch randy Myers in save situations in 96. ( Mostly in one inning situations.)

I remember because Zaun would hand his equipment bag to the bat boy when He would come in from the bullpen.

Not quite. In '96 Zaun caught one inning 10 times and only about 50 or 60% of those involved a save. You may remember Zaun jogging in from the bullpen because DJ did use Zaun to catch two or three innings way more than Buck uses his backup in similar situations. A lot of the one and two inning stings were early in the season. Hoiles << Wieters and it looks more like Zaun was a straight up defensive replacement when Hoiles was unlikely to bat again or his at bat would matter. It also looks like DJ gave Hoiles a partial game break way more than Buck does Wieters (not surprising since Wieters' defense is arguably much better than his backups and Buck tends to run starters into the ground). Anyway, the game logs don't support the idea that Zaun caught Myers in save situations, but rather that Zaun was used as a late inning defensive replacement a decent amount (but not on a very regular basis once the season matured).

Thanks for the clarification.

I remember Zaun coming in.

It makes sense because Holes was continuously dinged up.

Ugh. This is not the way to go. Let him walk. Sign a cheap one year stop gap and then let your no. 1 prospect take over who will be cost controlled for the next six years.

Machado and Tillman need to be the priorities. Not Wieters.

Well said, DD needs to get his act together, decline this meeting and get MM signed.

The Orioles didn't sign Markakis, they're not going to go out of their way to sign Matt to a multi-year deal.

He's not going to sign for some 7-8 million dollar a deal contract, and that's not just because Boras is his agent. Just isn't going to happen. He's had some pretty huge hits in clutch situations this year. If you argue that you haven't been watching the games. Sometimes reason is in short supply.

Are we talking about the same guy who was at one time referred to as "Switch Hitting Jesus" on this board? Amazing the standards he was once held to. If only we would have picked Madison Bumgardner in 2007, we would have been able to pick Buster Posey in 2008 and we would be wondering how to keep two more players with Manny.

He would have languished in the minors for years, then been included in a 5-for-1 deal for Barry Zito.

And at the time, I remember a lot of the baseball insiders projecting Ross Detwiler to be selected by the Orioles. It would have been interesting to see how different things would have turned out if the Orioles had selected Ross Detwiler in the 2007 Draft and then selected Buster Posey in the 2008 Draft. On one hand, the Orioles would have gotten a much better player in Buster Posey. On the other hand, they likely would have won a few more games and not been able to draft Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman who are critical pieces to the Orioles future.

    • Me too. Driving 4 hours to have a father daughter date. Can't wait!
    • The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense.
    • Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
    • How much different? They sat Judge yesterday, they threw their playoff starters for 5+ innings yesterday and today. They are also playing for the best record in the AL. They aren't mailing it in.
    • It’s not just the O’s. I’ve checked the Dodgers who have similar prices and they have a lot of upper deck NLDS games 2 & 3 available. Same for the NLCS. yanks still have seats available also. — In general, I’m sure alot of fans are just gonna wait till the day of to grab tickets.
    • That makes no sense. If they had to win their current series would have looked much different.
    • I agree. You have to wonder if the Yankees are behind him getting hit. Perhaps the ghost of George has struck
