Dan almost talks like a parody of fans on this board...."Hunter Harvey is well regarded,  DJ Stewart is back on people's boards,  I sort of like Stewart and Mullins, he is the fastest guy in the organization."   The depth of his on air conversation is pretty shallow and seems directed towards the most casual of fans.

I agree. He is brief.

For those who missed the interview, here is a summary…

They need to focus their efforts on adding to pitching staff. Likes the bullpen and thinks it's strong. Also wants to add LH bats to the lineup. Mentioned Mullins and Santander as possible in-house solutions, but he's not sure if they're ready. Said they need to be "resourceful" in terms of improving the starting pitching. Feels it's important to have at least one LH pitcher in the rotation (offers a competitive advantage). Feels like they have the opportunity to add LH bats at the DH and OF position. He also called Chris Davis out in terms of needing to improve and play up the expectations when they resigned him. Said that Hays has the tools to play every day, but downplayed his power a bit. Questioned whether or not he needed more seasoning. Looking to add OF depth, in case Hays isn't ready. When asked, he said the odds are "good" that Zach will be on the opening day roster. When asked if the team was "all in" for 2018 he said he thinks that's what people want. Feels they have a good core group and joked that rebuilding "isn't much fun". Mentioned that other teams who have recently rebuilt had to lose 100+ games before they got good (i.e., Cubs and Astros). Said he'd prefer to have lower draft picks and a good team then the opposite.

Referring back to the 2017 season he mentioned things like Tillman’s struggles and Zach injuries as contributing the team’s slide in the second half. Also cited Gausman’s inconsistencies and Ubaldo and Miley’s struggles. Was noncommittal when asked about possibly bringing him back on a one year deal (really made it sound like are were ready to move on).

He’s happy with the power on the current team (mentioned Machado and Schoop in particular). Also mentioned the importance of “taking” pitches and how it benefits the other players on the team.

When asked about Gausman, he felt he started to come around and regain his form towards the end of the season. Said he needs he has the tools, but needs to be more consistent and a better fielder. Wants to see him put it together for a full season.

When asked about the arbitration eligible players, he said they were his “core players” so he didn’t think it would be an issue. Also singled out Schoop again as having a great season. Said he’s improved every year he’s been in the big leagues. Praised his work ethic. Also mentioned that Manny hit the ball harder more consistently than anyone else in the league. And chalked up some of his struggles (early on) to the shift. Said that he was one of the most consistent players in the league. When asked about long term commitments to Schoop, he said it was a conversation for another day. When asked about Manny’s walk year (i.e., will he try to lock him up or trade him during the winter meetings), he said he doesn’t know the answer to that question. Went on to praise his “rare” combination of talent and skill. Said the team needs to decide Manny will be a long term fixture on the team. When asked about beckham, he said he liked his tools and that he showed them after the trade. Used the word “average” to describe his defense. Said he probably had the third best year on the club in terms of production.

When asked what is holding up player activity (i.e., no big signings / trades this offseason) he said he thinks a lot clubs are waiting to see what happens with Otani and Darvish. Also said he felt like a lot clubs have done a better job lately of locking up their better players.

When asked about the Rule 5 draft, said they’d look to see who’s there and who might be able to help them (mentioned pitchers in particular). Felt like they signed a few “decent” minor league pitchers last week (mentioned Marinez). Also mentioned he felt they have good middle infield depth, like Tejada, and the depth of their minor leagues (Harvey, Stewart, Mullins, Hays). He mentioned Stewart several times. Said other teams are asking about Stewart. Also mentioned Scott and Wells (pitchers). Mentioned Wells could really throw strikes.

When asked about tendering contracts, he mentioned David Ortiz as a player who was non-tendered. Said he expects there to be some good players available, but doesn’t expect any Orioles to be non-tendered.

    • No one is trading anything close to that for Crochet. But I agree..spend money, not prospects.
    • That's some high standards.  Sinker ball types are always going to have higher FIPs and lower K rates.  The truth is, Quintana is probably out of our price range.  That price range is probably no more than the standard Lyles/Gibson/Kimbrel/Frazier price range until otherwise seen.   Back to Quintana, I think he's the type of guy that if healthy could be a real weapon for us with our home ballpark and a home playoff game if we ever get deep into a series.
    • That's really the role/opening for next year that we need.  A RHH OF that could play some CF preferably.  Although, I'd lean more to and offensive minded portion of that versus the ability to play CF.  LF is big though at home. I think it's a role that Elias fills through trade, waivers, or maybe even a competition of milb deal types.  Like a RH Sam Hilliard type.
    • Yeah, he would be good in the Austin Slater role if he was willing to accept it. Not sure that he would be quite as good defensively in CF, given that he has played fewer than 100 innings total in CF since 2021. I highly doubt that he is ready to accept a role as a platoon player though, given that he is not yet 30, and he was an above average starter by rWAR from 2021-23. I doubt he is tendered a contract, given his $6M 2024 salary. His best bet is probably to sign a one year deal with a team that doesn't hope to compete, to attempt to reestablish himself as an everyday player, while the team that signs him can hope to flip him at the trade deadline.
    • I agree. He’d be a great regular season fit in Cinncy’s ballpark. Maybe that confidence of knowing he can hit the ball out to LF at home covers up his other decencies.  As for Crochet… can’t we just resign Burnes?  Crochet would probably cost Holliday, Basallo, and Mayo. Didn’t the deadline teach us the cost of pitching? I’m for trading Mountcastle. I’d hope we can surround the young hitters with a Burnes led staff with adding a vet bat to the DH/1B mix. Other than that, I think we will roll with what we have. And we should.
    • Hays will want to start somewhere. He shouldn't start for us. We don't want him sitting on the bench looking dejected while Kjerstad and Cowser are mashing bombs onto Eutaw Street.
