Matthew Edward Harvey - The Real Deal or Damaged Goods?

I know he's been discussed in other threads, but at this point why not trade a reliever for Harvey and gamble on him bouncing back? For context he's arbitration eligible in 2018 and a UFA in 2019. Thoughts? Would you give up Brach for him? or even Britton? I know he has a very low floor (and high ceiling), but I feel like these are the types of players the Orioles need to take some chances on.

Also...the Mets could really use a 3B and have a very nice young SS prospect. Just sayin'...

Matt Harvey - S - Mets

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Orioles are seen as one team that could consider a trade for Mets right-hander Matt Harvey.

We know that the Mets have already discussed a potential trade for Harvey with at least two clubs. The Orioles hope to add multiple starters this offseason and could aim to buy-low on Harvey. The 28-year-old is coming off a brutal 6.70 ERA in 92 2/3 innings this past season and has one more year of team control remaining.

Matt Harvey - S - Mets

Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports that the Mets have discussed Matt Harvey with at least two teams this offseason.

According to Ackert, the Mets were attempting to flip him for a reliever and were much more inclined to move Harvey than Robert Gsellman or Seth Lugo. Harvey is entering his third and final year of arbitration and is coming off of a troublesome season where he posted a cringe-inducing 6.70 ERA in 92 2/3 innings.

I am sure the problem is salary. The O's might do a C prospect for an experimental project, but they are not going to pay $6M for a guy with his numbers.

To answer the question, he is damaged goods with upside.

For Brach or Britton, I want controlled MLB ready prospects.

Is there potential to expand the deal to make it worthwhile? Or maybe we hold out for someone like Gsellman?

I think Harvey's ceiling is MUCH greater than Tillman. The floor's about the same.

I don’t know about that.   We’re not talking about the pre-surgery Harvey here.    He doesn’t have the ceiling of returning to 2013/2015 form, IMO.    However, looking at his crazy HR/FB rate of 20.6% last year, it’s possible that he could be a decent back-end starter if that normalizes and he gets his walks down.

In my opinion, this is exactly the type of risk the Orioles need to take. Obviously, the cost matters. What's it going to take to get Harvey? The guy has the potential to be lights out. You have Harvey, Gausman, Bundy, throw in Tillman and Gonzo. Hey, if things come together, you might have something with that rotation. Harvey has alot to play for. He should be highly motivated.

We're not signing an ace -- Darvish. Like, that's not happening. Heck, Alex Cobb is out of our price range. DD has to take some risks if he wants "to go for it" this year.

What kind of reliever would it take?  We're not trading Britton, Givens, Brach or Castro for Matt Harvey.  I don't think the Mets would do it for O'Day. Yacabonis or Asher maybe? That seems like way too little for a starter, no matter how bad of year he had last year. I truly think offering Ynoa back would just be insulting. Would Bleier be enough?

Couldn't be a worse fit in the history of baseball, especially off the field. Harvey is this NY celebrity type who loves the spotlight and everything that massive city has to offer. He would probably jump off the Bay Bridge after a month here. If it happens it will be a disaster, mark my words. Oh and he is a complete shell of himself on the mound. That too.

Harvey's ERA last year was more than a run worse than Miley's and just a tenth of a run better than Ubaldo's. He also went back on the DL in June because his surgery hadn't healed altogether. And in May he was suspended by the team for 3 games for missing a game after partying until 4am and then playing a round of golf in the morning.

Don't trade for him unless you can throw Trumbo in the deal.

    • No one is trading anything close to that for Crochet. But I agree..spend money, not prospects.
    • That's some high standards.  Sinker ball types are always going to have higher FIPs and lower K rates.  The truth is, Quintana is probably out of our price range.  That price range is probably no more than the standard Lyles/Gibson/Kimbrel/Frazier price range until otherwise seen.   Back to Quintana, I think he's the type of guy that if healthy could be a real weapon for us with our home ballpark and a home playoff game if we ever get deep into a series.
    • That's really the role/opening for next year that we need.  A RHH OF that could play some CF preferably.  Although, I'd lean more to and offensive minded portion of that versus the ability to play CF.  LF is big though at home. I think it's a role that Elias fills through trade, waivers, or maybe even a competition of milb deal types.  Like a RH Sam Hilliard type.
    • Yeah, he would be good in the Austin Slater role if he was willing to accept it. Not sure that he would be quite as good defensively in CF, given that he has played fewer than 100 innings total in CF since 2021. I highly doubt that he is ready to accept a role as a platoon player though, given that he is not yet 30, and he was an above average starter by rWAR from 2021-23. I doubt he is tendered a contract, given his $6M 2024 salary. His best bet is probably to sign a one year deal with a team that doesn't hope to compete, to attempt to reestablish himself as an everyday player, while the team that signs him can hope to flip him at the trade deadline.
    • I agree. He’d be a great regular season fit in Cinncy’s ballpark. Maybe that confidence of knowing he can hit the ball out to LF at home covers up his other decencies.  As for Crochet… can’t we just resign Burnes?  Crochet would probably cost Holliday, Basallo, and Mayo. Didn’t the deadline teach us the cost of pitching? I’m for trading Mountcastle. I’d hope we can surround the young hitters with a Burnes led staff with adding a vet bat to the DH/1B mix. Other than that, I think we will roll with what we have. And we should.
    • Hays will want to start somewhere. He shouldn't start for us. We don't want him sitting on the bench looking dejected while Kjerstad and Cowser are mashing bombs onto Eutaw Street.
