Why does anyone in this thread think that Machado would entertain signing an extension with the Orioles? It's been pretty clear from the get go that he wanted to get paid in free agency.

Oh, he is gonna get paid. No doubt about that. We will have to be the high bidder to keep him.

Maybe by a lot.

You think 5% more than the Yankees are offering gets it done?

Think of how stacked that team will be for the next few years.  Much better chance at getting a ring.

That is true. I would think that money being even, Machado would stay in his comfortable environment, but you may be right. Not trading him by now is the dumbest possible scenario, but here we are.

I would think the "Not-Yankees" tax would be in the  12 to 15 % range. That adds another generation.

Hosmer has been in the league for seven seasons, and has three good ones.  Folks focus on Davis' down years, but 11 of Hosmer's 14 wins worth of career value came in three seasons.

Weird about Hosmer, every other year is really bad and pretty good. There is no inbetween with this guy.

Doesn't make too much sense, not sure, Ive seen this type of split for as long as he has done it.

Yeah, Hosmer has been no more consistent than Davis, and his “up” years haven’t been as strong as Davis’ “up” years.    That said, the fact that he’s two years younger works strongly in his favor, plus the annual salary is less.    I don’t like either deal, but I’d say Davis’ was worse, even without applying 20/20 hindsight and knowing how Davis’ deal has gone the last two years.

Channeling the ghost of Harry Heilmann, who won batting titles in '21, '23, '25, and '27.  Except that Heilmann's even years make Eric Hosmer's good years look like Ryan Flaherty...
