The 2 things that immediately come to my mind in regard to Earle Bruce's 9-year tenure as the head coach of Ohio State between the 1979 and 1987 seasons are ........

1 ll In his very first season in 1979 after having replaced Woody Hayes, he coached a 19 year-old Art Schlichter-led team to an 11-0 regular season, and they subsequently just barely lost to defending National Champion and fellow unbeaten team (10-0-1 USC) in the Rose Bowl by one point, 17-16.

2)ll In his final game coaching the team in 1987, he was carried off of the field by his players after defeating bowl-bound Michigan. Bruce had been fired earlier that week, and his players gave him two well-deserved going away presents ........ beating Michigan AND triumphantly carrying him off of the field.

In his 9 seasons as head coach of the Buckeyes (1979-1987), Bruce won 4 Big Ten Championships ........ 2 outright, and 2 shared. His teams also went to bowl games in every one of his first 8 seasons between 1979 and 1986, going 5-3 in said games, culminating in a win over #8 Texas A&M in the 1986 season Cotton Bowl on January 1st of 1987.

Bruce was 87 years-old.
