Anyone else think he's the dark horse to close? I just don't get the sense that Buck trusts Givens in that role.

He's got the stuff, but I think that would have to be a role he would need to earn by having success over the next month or so. I could see him earning it though, especially if Givens continues to struggle.

Sort of germane to the topic, but I wonder what role he'll have?  I highly doubt Buck would pitch him in the 8th or 9th innings of a close game, at least at first.  My guess would be a middle innings role.  I would assume Givens is now the closer?  As for the setup guys, I guess maybe Castro and either Wright or Scott?  With Britton and Brach gone, there's quite a bit to sort out.

So having never seen him, what separates him from Dennis Sarfate?

Looks like Sarfate is playing in Japan right now so I would say the most complete answer is the Pacific Ocean.

On a more serious note:

Sarfate's career AAA numbers:     3.74 ERA  1.48 WHIP.   280 K's in 267 IP

Carroll's career AAA numbers:    2.47 ERA   1.053 WHIP.   57 K's in 43.2 IP

Perhaps a better question is what do they have in common?

I'm GUESSING that Gary Thorne will be able to pronounce Carroll's name without including the syllable "fart" in it.

Although Gary could surprise me.
