Something fun for the All-star break...

Be open and honest as to your surefire player/coach/manager/management views that have come back to prove you wrong.

Younger players are still, well... young, things can change, but again... as of today, who was your "Boy was I wrong!":p

One more I just thought of. I remember being mad that the Orioles and Earl Weaver were going to screw up a young third baseman by moving him to short. I guess in retrospect Cal Jr. did okay. Too bad Earl did not think about earlier and we could have kept the starter of Oriole Magic, Doug Decinces.

No joke about the crabcakes out here, though. I'm still looking for a good one.

My bride will not allow me to order a crabcake unless we're in MD or certain parts of VA.

It's not for my benefit, she's just tired of all the complaining ;-)

Don't feel bad. Only 3 people on the planet thought he could play SS... 2 of them were named Cal, and the third one was named Earl.

As for DeCinces, he just had to go. The guy following Brooks was in an impossible situation.

I get your point about Doug but considering the parade of third baseman that followed the man that replaced the legend, the Orioles were wrong to trade him for Disco Dan.

I can remember being the happiest kid alive when the O's traded for Glenn Davis and could care less that they gave up Schilling, Finley, and Harnish to get him.

I wasn't exactly a kid, but I'm with you. I thought this was a great trade.

30 homeruns for a player who's home field was the AstroDome; pre-steroid era; unheard of. For three guys most of us didn't have a clue about - pre Hangout, Baseball America website, etc..

I would have to say my biggest are:

1.) Thinking Corey Patterson would become the YOUNG mainstay in center we needed.

2.) Thinking the Orioles ever should have thought about getting Barry Zito. That is my worst I believe.

3.) I was wrong in aggressively collecting multiple autographs of the following "FUTURE STARS" of the Orioles... Calvin Maduro, Sidney Ponson, Matt Riley, Ryan Kohlmier, Calvin Pickering, Ryan Minor, Larry Bigbie, Fernando Lunar, Luis Matos, Jerry Hairston, Tim Raines Jr., Willie Greene, Val Majewski, Chris Singleton, Josh Towers, Mike Kinkade, Mike Figga, Jay Spurgeon, Jorge Julio, Jesse Garcia, and there are TONS more...... god we really really did have a HORRID farm system! NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT I PAID FOR A LOT OF THOSE AUTOGRAPHS!!!!

BOY I WAS REALLY REALLY WRONG.

Mine have already been mentioned:

I thought Chen would hang around longer. Oops...

I thought Mazzone would have a better effect on the pitching staff. Oops...

I expected Loewen to be successful by now, and his chances appear to be sliding away. Oops...

I'm not ready to admit that I was wrong about D-Cab yet though. :P

I thought Bedard, Loewen and DCab would become the next Mulder, Zito and Hudson...boy, was I wrong!

I thought that Brian Roberts was the guy to trade because Hairston was better than BRob in the short run, and Fontenot would be better than BRob in the long run...boy, was I ever wrong!

I turned my nose up at the thought of Ervin Santana and Manny Aybar for Miguel Tejada...boy, was I wrong!

I thought Markakis was just a signability and ethnic loyalty pick...boy was I wrong!

Now is the time for all you John Stephens fans to confess. Let's see a show of hands. I know you're out there.

As for me, I thought Craig Worthington would have a solid 15-year career. Brad Pennington. Ouch. Hurts to admit I thought he would be good. What was I thinking? Alex Ochoa. There are many more I've been wrong about.

Chris Richards looked like the real deal to me...thought we had 1b solved for many years.....WRONG!

Good one. He was one I hadn't thought about -- I liked him a lot when we first got him.

Another big one for me that was already mentioned was Eric DuBose. I thought we had found a steal with a former top pick who had just needed time to recover from injury.

I had my doubts if Stephens could be successful long-term, but I felt he deserved an opportunity in the bigs.

… The fact that he did not achieve success, it not same as saying someone was wrong for wanting to give him an opportunity. "

IIRC, there were plenty here who who adamant that he would be a successful major leaguer. I never contended he didn't deserve an opportunity, nor am I suggesting I know better than anyone else, not that you said that anyway.

    • Well I sort of disagree here. You said guys have been bad to questionable. I think that’s wrong. I just think a few guys have been awful and that has really hurt us. I would absolutely give Washington more time. Brade and Kane are well liked but doubtful they want to play them much right now. A trade should be considered if things don’t improve.
    • Yeah, I'd rather keep him over Soto.  I mean Soto can't start.  Yes Soto was dominant at times out of the bullpen but he was also gasoline on a fire out of the bullpen.  I would rather pay Suarez $4 or 5 million, knowing he can start or pitch in the bullpen than Soto, knowing he can only start and is liable to melt down when needed most.
    • It is funny how much Hays (the pre-2024 version anyway) matches the type of player they'll likely look for. I doubt that reunion happens though.
    • Weird thing about Suarez is that MASN had this being a 2 year deal when they talked about him back in April. ”The Orioles made another smart move with Suárez by signing him to a two-year contract in September. They knew what they’d ask from him and how it could contradict, and they didn’t want to give him any reasons to resist.” https://www.masnsports.com/blog/another-look-at-how-suarez-came-to-the-orioles
    • Dam the mosquito is in my Jelly. Please go away
    • Elias is refusing to spend money that Rubenstein has made available.  Do you have any sources?
    • Outside Hamilton, I can't really think of any areas or invidivuals outside the line that have really stepped up.  Humphrey and Stephens have played okay but it certainly hasn't offset the complete zeroes that Eddie Jackson and Marcus Williams have been.  I don't think you want to pull Hamilton off SS even though he can handle deep zone assignments fine, because he's essentially a linebacker that can cover wide receivers and there's too much value in that in the box.  And I think that Roquan/Simpson look lost in pass coverage because the safeties behind them are playing like butt.  Besides Roquan wasn't ever really a great coverage safety, he was kind of okay at it but he was never like a Lavonte David or Fred Warner there.   I'm starting to wonder if we need to either trade for a FS and/or start giving Ardarius Washington more snaps.  He certainly doesn't look worse than Jackson/Williams at this point in his limited playing time.  In general i think safety is an undervalued position so we're likely to get good value in trade.
