Give Sisco another Chance

It makes zero sense to not play Sisco at catcher.  He seems to call a good game and he needs to work on catching to get better.  We are not in the playoff hunt so none of the nonsense about Severino being a better catcher.

I realize that anything that doesn't agree with your narrow views makes "zero sense" but those of us that live in a world of shades of gray realize there is much more to this story.

Severino is still a young catcher as well and is superior defensively in many, many aspects behind the plate. You don't just bury Severino which is why Sisco should get PAs at DH and perhaps some at 1B though doesn't make a lot of sense unless you plan to put Mancini back in RF.

I have zero problems with Sisco catching as well and although he's a well below average defender, this team is going nowhere so why not let him gain experience.

The most important thing right now is to get him every day PAs against right-handed pitching. That should include a healthy share of DHing when not catching.

Why should he not face left-handed pitching. He destroyed Left handed pitching in Triple A this year.  I get that Severino can't hit right handed pitching but why is this all about him.  He never put up big numbers in the minors. You seem to be stuck on an opinion and don't want to change it given evidence.

You say Severino is a better catcher by far yet I bring up defensive metrics you say they are worthless.  I haven't looked but I bet pitcher ERA is much lower in games Sisco has caught.

So you want to point out that Severino has never hit before this year but you want to judge Sisco's hitting against lefties on 62 AAA PAs when he's never hit lefties before?

I'm fine if you want to run Sisco out there everyday against lefties as well, but he should not be playing catcher in front of Severino. CERA is flawwed in many ways, but Severino is superior in the throwing game, receiving, framing, and blocking to Sisco. Hell, let's throw tagging in there as well since Sisco seems to think showing the umpire the ball after it falls on the ground while "tagging the guy" with an empty glove will get him an out.

I like what I see when it comes to his bat, but he'll need to keep OPSing .900+ to overcome his defensive shortcomings and with Rutschman in the fold, they might as well start looking for another position for him.

I agree with Tony, that both Sisco and Severino should continue to get every day at bats.  One doesn't need to come at the expense of the other.  They are both young players who have shown some potential and need to be developed.

We only have a handful of players now on the 25 that really NEED to be getting everyday at bats for developmental and trade value purposes.  They are Mancini, Villar, Santander, Sisco, and Severino.  Their at bats shouldn't come at the expense of each other, but at the expense of everyone else on the roster.

What are the ERA's with both of them catching? I haven't seen a ton of games but to me it looks like Sisco calls a better game.

Anyway Sisco deserves the opportunity to show whether he can stick at catcher. He should be given the rest of the year to show it.  We are the worst team in the league and we really don't have any other prospects on the team.  If you hit at every level in the minors you should be given an opportunity in the majors as you have earned it.

If he doesn't improve by the end of the season with his shortcomings than you can think about another position. If he is good enough to catch in the majors and hits he will be very easy to trade and get a lot of value in return if and when  Rutschman is ready to replace him.

I am not sure why Martin and Broxton who are absolutely terrible get to play every frequently. And I don't see Sisco being as bad defensively as Mancini is in the outfield and I don't hear you posting continually how he should be DH only.

This.  I love what Sisco is doing right now, but Severino is also doing quite well.  You need two catchers anyway and Severino looks like he might be turning into a piece with some value if he can maintain a .750 OPS and at least average catcher defense.  That's something that a lot of teams may be interested in next year.  Why does it need to be one or the other?  There's room for them both to get PAs, even if neither is catching every day.

Fixed that up for you.

There is little doubt Sisco needs to be in the lineup against righties right now. Whether that be at C, 1B, or DH, he needs everyday ABs. I'd rather them come at DH for now which means Nunez goes to the bench with Mancini at 1B. Davis should be permanently on the bench...in his house...in Siberia.

Fixed that for BOTH of you ;)

And no RedskinRick I'm not wishing that he dies of frostbite.

The pitchers sure seem to pitch a lot better when Sisco is catching than when Serverino is catching.  Even last night Serverino catches for an inning 4 runs.

Correlation isn’t causation l. Both look fine behind the dish.

You’ve got to like the way Sisco’s been swinging the bat heading into the break.    .283/.394/.667 with 6 homers and 17 RBI in 71 PA.    Among the positive developments of 2019, the development of power  in Sisco’s bat ranks right near the top for me.

    • So it is different from last year? Last year the games were something like 3:00, 4:30, 7:00, and 8:30.   Have they said it will be different this year???
    • Me too. Driving 4 hours to have a father daughter date. Can't wait!
    • The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense. I prefer to play NY. Worse pen, doesn’t run as much.  Not a bunch of contact hitters.
    • Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
    • How much different? They sat Judge yesterday, they threw their playoff starters for 5+ innings yesterday and today. They are also playing for the best record in the AL. They aren't mailing it in.
    • It’s not just the O’s. I’ve checked the Dodgers who have similar prices and they have a lot of upper deck NLDS games 2 & 3 available. Same for the NLCS. yanks still have seats available also. — In general, I’m sure alot of fans are just gonna wait till the day of to grab tickets.
    • That makes no sense. If they had to win their current series would have looked much different.
