We should be all over this. De Jong just turned 25 a month ago. He pitched in the hitter friendly PCL at ages 22-24. So pretty young for AAA at first. He has an option left. He’s at least the “prospect” that Josh Rogers is. All things considered, he should be a no brainer to have over Wright and/or Hart.

The four-seamer isn’t especially fast on the radar, generally 88-92, but it can tail in on right-handers and plays up when his change-up is working, which it has been lately. He also has a slider and an occasional curve but the fastball/change combo is the key to his success.

Is a starter that is more valuable then Hart,  Wright. or Alberto who are all out of options.

He has one option left.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

This guy is a terrible pitcher.  And any conversation that includes comparison to Hart, Wright or Alberto is practically self defeating.  Wait?  Did you say he has an option? ;)

I think the O's would be lucky if they could trade Donnie Hart for Chase De Jong.   Hart is a 28 year old Loogy  reliever that has  had decreased effectiveness over the last two years.  He is out of options.  Is not likely to make the team on opening day and will have to clear waivers to get to  the minors.

De Jong is a 25 year old starter who had a good year in 2018 in 30 starts at AA/AAA and the MLB all with ERAs under 4.00  . He was a 2nd round draft choice of the Blue Jays.  He has one option left.  So he can go to Norfolk and continue to develop.

Very unlikely to get a starter that throws 95 with three polished  pitches off the waiver wire or in trade for Donnie Hart.

He’s a RHP who averages <90mph with his FB and lacks an above avg secondary pitch. He’s a RH version of Josh Rogers, I don’t see the Elias valuing that skill set.

Or on a more simplistic level, I don't see Elias valuing someone who pitched most of his age 24 season in AA averaging 6.6 K/9.

De Jong reached AAA in 2016 and the majors in 2017, but found himself pitching adequately in AA in 2018.  And apparently has trouble topping 90mph on the radar.  I don't see how he's appreciably better than Mike Wright.  Seems like a random guy with 45 stuff.

We can spend a lot of time using the very limited information we have trying to determine whether some other team’s 41st guy is better or has more potential than our 40th guy, or better meets the needs of our 40-man roster for some reason.    Personally, I’m just going to leave that up to Elias & co., who have much more detailed information on these guys than we do.   I really couldn’t tell you if De Jong would be better for us than Hart or Wright or whoever, or who would be better between Cecchini, Reinheimer or Valera for a utility infield spot.   I’m not going to go as far as saying it’s like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, but I just don’t feel like I’m qualified to intelligently comment on decisions this obscure.

You mean like Martin and Jackson played the infield at AA  last season?  Those are Elias moves.

IMO the option makes De Jong more attractive then someone that can't be sent to the minors without going threw waivers.

There are different levels of talent and ability and experience among AA players.  They're not just clones of one another.
