Can Means become the Orioles’ version of Kuechel?

P. S. I just looked up Brad Bergesen on Baseball Reference. Would you believe he’s only 33 years old? Seems like he pitched for us a hundred years ago. He had a decent little swan song in Arizona in 2012, putting up career bests in K/9 and WHIP in 29.2 relief innings. And then he disappeared and was no more.

After he left the majors he spent a little time in Japan.  Was last seen in the Atlantic League in 2017.  It is surprising he's only 33. The last time he  put on an Oriole uniform was before the 2012 turn-around.  He was two eras ago.

High on the Walks and the Pitch-Count, but also high on the Strikeouts.

73% of the outs that Means recorded (11 out of 15) came via the Strikeout and the Groundout.

This was the 2nd consecutive outing in which Means threw a lot of pitches in the very 1st inning (27 Pitches in his last out against the Rangers, 33 Pitches today against the Blue Jays.)

If this is indeed the case, then there is at least a mild possibility that the extra rest will "re-energize" Means' pitching arm in some way, shape, or form.

Of course, it is equally possible that Means will also sustain some rust in his first couple of starts back from this mild injury.

In Means' last 2 outings, he needed 103 pitches each time to get through 5 Innings, walking 5 batters overall in the process.

The good news is that he only ceded 3 Earned Runs overall in those 10 Innings Pitched.

It will be interesting to see how he does from here.   Even if you assume he’s healthy, we’ve seen instances where once a pitcher who is on a nice run has his routine disrupted, he is unable to find the fine balance he had before he missed time.

Brad Bergesen comes to mind. Not that he had great stuff to begin with.
