Because Jordan is such a high quality person, I'm sure it does bother him that he had such high profile bust picks as Hobgood and Rowell (I have a whole other story on the Rowell situation but I save that for another time if people are interested), but at the end of the day, the man is an outstanding elevator of talent and I learned a lot from him over the years I spent having conversations about scouting.

I'm interested.

I was referring to Jordan and Hobgood.

Hobgood was always a hidden eater. Not that he should be ashamed of that. But that was not what the Orioles asked for or paid him for. As a guy who eats, I understand.  I always did what I was being paid to do. And to hide that you weren't is a huge character flaw right there. The Orioles would have gotten him a life coach and counselor to help.

It's not like he could have given back the money to pursue competitive eating.  As he said in the article. He spent the money.

Also, he was old.

If Hobgood pitched like Jordan expected, he would probably have been a good pick. I think Jordan's knocked for not appropriately weighting the downside in the end..

It’s like in fantasy sports drafts though; you don’t take players based on how well you think they’ll do, you take them based on where you think you can draft them.

Hobgood was a headscratching first round pick and wasn’t mocked anywhere near there. He could have been a supposed first round talent acquired in the second round, or later.

That is a lot harder when you can't trade down.

We could’ve drafted someone else. If money wasn’t an issue than this isn’t a problem.

Huh?

My point is if you really think Hobgood was the guy you have to pull the trigger at five.  Odds are very good he wouldn't have been there at 2-5.

It has been a while, but I recall there was a mock that had him rising into the low teens. Others were on him, jut not in the Matzek/Wheeler range.

I don't have access to the Athletic, but what is lost on me is whether the Hobgood pick is viewed by experienced scouts as bad luck or bad decision making. We know it was a bad decision in the end, but was the process flawed? Tony's explanation essentially points to bad luck. I'm guessing others would differ.

I don't believe this is correct.  I seem to recall most mocks had him in the mid/late 1st round.

I've said bad process since 10 seconds after the pick was made so I'm sticking with it.

At the time he was here, I thought Jordan did a good job. In hindsight, that was because the guys before him were historically bad. Now I think he did mostly a poor job. Always liked the guy but, short of the no brainers, he didn't have a lot of guys that he found in later rounds.

Not necessarily. Did Jordan have enough info on why Hobgood had such a velocity jump that senior year? Did he go against the conventional wisdom in order to make some "I know something you guys don't know" statement?

Sure, Hobgood never showing the velocity or stuff after he arrived was a bit of bad luck, and maybe he was hurt, but it also does leave open a question of PEDs. Sure, Jordan is not going to say anything and everyone who has met Hobgood likes him, but that doesn't necessarily mean he never took them to get that bump in velocity.

Now I'm not saying he did or didn't, but he did have a classic velocity jump for short period of time, followed by a drop off in the pros. If he did, he's not the first or last kid who in high school took something that enabled a velocity jump.

I know in the High School wrestling community it's an issue and I honestly wish they would start drug testing for PEDs in high school, especially with the pressure these young men are put under to get scholarships or potentially millions of dollars in bonus money by getting drafted high.

Again, I'm not saying Hobgood did anything or not, but it would be foolish to just ignore the evidence, even if it's circumstantial.

    • Cowser’s  swing decisions are determined before the pitch is even thrown. And I’ve been saying this all year, and I even said this at the game. I go it’s too early to pinch it for him because his defense is too good but he is 100% going to strike out and that’s exactly what he did with bases loaded. He decides whether he is going to swing a pitch before even thrown This is why he swings at a thrown pretty close to his face . And To be fair,he  had a pretty good season doing that but obviously can be  easily exploited
    • Cowser's progress was one of the more encouraging elements this season, especially on the defensive side. I was already crediting him with being Some Kind of Good major leaguer a post back. Between his and Adley's standout bad performances on the HBP and 2-0 count, I give Cowser more of a grace.     Sure he had predetermined intent to swing, but I think the follow through was some raw instinct as hand bones fractured. Adley not swinging was the lowlight how incapacitated he was.    I believe he commands the strike zone, but to feel so low you can't pull the trigger in that spot...sheesh.
    • I believe Elias plans to bring in two more SP's, the quality isnt what im sure about. But no question he'll want to replace Burnes. Which is why I didnt comment in this thread yet because Povich might not have a spot open at the beginning of the year.
    • So a “Pollyanna” then like me, @wildcard and others (joking of course) 😇 I’m in your camp but really wonder if Elias/Hyde and Co. can truly“flip the script” as @Just Regular alludes.
    • So thats because the extra space in the OF allows for more balls to fall in? If so, I don't really see an issue if its providing offense in a different way.
    • I'm neutral on it. I don't like how the old dimensions played like a wiffle ball field. Both teams have to play on it and the O's do have two good OF's so in that sense it helps us. RHH will probably hate it so very few would ever sign in Baltimore unless they thought the O's were in World Series contention. If they put it in the middle ground then the dimensions become like every other park and Im not sure I want that. At least Camden Yards plays different.
    • I agree with this.  It was a completely idiotic take to criticize the fans.  And Russo on MLB Network did as well.  Did those guys watch this team at all this year? They were under .500 for the last 88 games of the season.....the worst team in the AL East.  These were the home series they played over the last three months: Chicago Cubs (swept and outscored 21-2), Yankees (lost 2 of 3 and needed two Yankee errors to walk off the last one), San Diego (lost 2 of 3), Toronto (won 3 of 4), Washington (split 1 of 2), Boston (split 2 of 4), Houston (split 2 of 4), White Sox (won 2 of 3 but lost last one 8-1), Tampa (lost 2 of 3), San Fran (lost 2 of 3), Detroit (lost 2 of 3). What is that, 15 - 20 in their last 35 home games?  And then they top it off by losing to the Royals 1 - 0 in the first game?  So fans are supposed to be excited and encouraged by that stretch of baseball?   You want people to show up to games, play like the Padres. Don't have your prized prospects go bust, don't have your stars fall off a cliff, and learn how to play fundamental baseball instead of obsessing about each swing's potential exit velocity.
