I like the quotes about Bradish at the end.  Is he on the same level as a Baumann, Kremer, or an Akin?  Wouldn't that be nice.

They seem to think so.  Guess we will wait and see but if he is another arm in the mix of that group of starters that could be anywhere from your third to fifth starter, that would be nice.

It will also make the Bundy trade look better.

In the Inside the Yard podcast, Blood was asked a question about Rodriguez and Hall, and in answering it, he brought up Bradish as though he belonged with those guys.    Wouldn’t that be an awesome development?

That would be great,  but just to be clear, Bradish  like Hall and Rodriguez does not have to be added to the 40 man roster so I don't expect to see any of them in the majors next season.

Yeah, not worried about that, but it would be nice if Bradish was a guy with TOR potential.   I’m still not expecting that, but I’m dreaming on it based on my read of what Blood has said.

Just to remind everyone, Bradish was drafted out of New Mexico State at 21 in 2018.   The last couple of years, the Angels weren’t sending pitchers to short season ball after being drafted, so Bradish didn’t pitch professionally that year.   In 2019 he was sent to Inland Empire in the California League, where he pitched to a 4.28 ERA and 1.416 WHIP, striking out 120 in 101 innings and allowing only 90 hits.   Those are pretty decent numbers for the California League, but they certainly don’t scream TOR when you look at them.    So Blood’s high praise was welcome news.     (To be clear, Blood has not said TOR, that’s my optimistic spin on what could happen based on what he said in this article and on the podcast.)

Blood will play next season at 24.   I assume he’ll start the year at Bowie, but that he could jump to Norfolk at some point.   He does not need to be on the 40-man roster until after the 2022 season, so I agree it’s doubtful we see him in Baltimore in 2021 unless he’s just completely lights out.

Here’s a collection of various things Luke said about Bradish while he was still an OH scouting analyst:

Bradish is the Baumann type, could be a big stuff guy but with a delivery and command that make some think bullpen.

It's completely a bet that Holt and crew can develop pitchers.
***
Bradish - has a slider that wasn't shown here, has been up to 96 with the fastball, you can see the unique release angle

***
Kyle
Bradish - extreme over the top delivery, will show mid rotation stuff, high spin curve, but has trouble holding it

***

Bradish is tough to place among the O's prospects, because the 12-24 range is littered with mediocre stuff performers, where Bradish isn't that, he could have mid-rotation stuff but needs to throw more strikes. He fits with what Holt is doing and I wouldn't be surprised if he comes out and shoots up lists next year.

And, here’s the start of a five-tweet thread Luke posted on Twitter:

Generally the drop off from the last pick in the first round and the first pick in the second round isn't pronounced.

Every pick has better odds than every pick behind it, but the drop between any two picks outside of the very top few (without 20/20 hindsight) is almost too small to measure.

Could Gunnar really be that good? After so many first round duds, getting a legit guy in the second round would be great.

He has a mid first talent grade, there were signability questions and I believe we went way overslot to get him to sign.

That would be amazing if our entire starting rotation by 2022 was all homegrown players. I guess Kremer and Kradish may not quite be homegrown but still spending roughly a year plus in our system. It would dwarf anything this franchise has done with pitching going back to the early 70's if maybe even longer.  Not that any of them are TOR pieces or ever will be.

It seems clear we think the high arm slot to maximize top of zone attack is good policy.

The Astros curated Justin Verlander to basically giving up nothing but HR with this tweak.  After a couple few years of this, the Nolan Ryan of our generation, something of a pitching mechanics Apollo, just had his TJ to line himself up as a dreamy Javy Lopez to someone's Miguel Tejada next offseason.   Unlike Paxton or Giles, we don't even need to spring for a 2-year deal to pay JV to rehab next year (I admire Paxton's gumption throwing this week trying to claw back after the "setback" on his first attempt to return from a flexor strain, but he's probably looking at long odds.  His agent will face a tough sell even if he manages a few okay October innings, not that I think the Yankees will be clamoring to get him up there).

Ten for 2022: Means, Akin, Kremer, Baumann, Hall, Rodriguez, Harvey, (Verlander, Paxton, Giles) - can I get about 90% of the 2022 team's innings please?  Mostly just having fun with Hunter there, but you can dream - Bradish might pump that same high heat that year.  If I give JV 1/20, JP 2/10 and KG 2/8, I think Lindor's $35M still only takes the 2022 payroll from like $75M to $110M, Chris Davis and all.   Adley doesn't even have to do any media until he starts getting them there MVP votes.

    • A question precedes #2: when will the left field wall be fixed?  I think I remember Elias saying they probably went too far, which is quite literally true.  No reason they can't fix it quickly.  I had no problem with them moving it back but it is pretty absurd where it is.
    • On #3, I would guess that Elias is very wary about going longer than 3 years for a starting pitcher (maybe four years if pitcher is younger and AAV is favorable).  I think Mike and Sig believe the history of long-term SP deals isn’t favorable and the wrong deal could derail a mid-market team with dead money.  I’m not sure they are wrong (e.g., Patrick Corbin, Strasberg).   I don’t think ownership cares directly; I would guess they just give Elias an annual baseball ops budget and forecast and he can choose how he manages against that.   Not in play Gerrit Cole Corbin Burnes Max Fried Blake Snell Jack Flaherty    Possible free agent targets Yusei Kikuchi Nathan Eovaldi Nick Pivetta Sean Manaea Luis Severino Alex Cobb Max Scherzer Justin Verlander Jose Quintana Frankie Montas Spencer Turnbull Andrew Heaney Matthew Boyd   Possible trade targets Garret Crotchet Sandy Alcantera Jesus Luzardo Eduardo Cabrera Reid Detmers Emerson Hancock Jordan Montgomery Lance McCullers Jr.
    • Is Webb anything special.  I would rather replace Webb with Norfolk shuttle guy.
    • Our SS is Gunnar, our CF in this scenario would be Cowser, and C is Adley. Hopefully none of those guys are in contention for being the team's worst hitter next season. We don't need a power bat in LF - we need to add a good contact bat, that can use all fields and run.
    • Kemp was part of it but bringing back 2 UTIL IF is blocking your best prospect when your manager covets veteranosity. If they aren’t resigned then Holliday gets a longer leash.
    • LF is a bit of a waste of a spot for #9 hitter.  Its not a premium defensive position so you shoudl be able to get a decent bat who can also play there.  If you're worst hitter isn't an SS, C or CF, either you're contending for a WS , or something isn't quite right.  And this team isn't quite WS contenders just yet.
    • A lot could change between now and then, but right now he's the 4th starter. I like Povich more than most around here and think he can be a solid 4th starter. He may have been command days, but he doesn't get hit hard.  The cool new Baseball Savant chart shows his fastball and curve and have above average movement and is why his slightly below average velocity (.9 MPH below MLB avg for LHP) plays up a bit.
