Here are the players eligible for  Rule 5 selection this year. The Orioles 40-man as of 10/4 is 35 players. Here's how I see them being protected Must Protects Yusniel Diaz - OF Michael

Pop would get claimed imo.   I would definitely protect all of those Tony list as must and possible.  We have the spots to do it right now and easily could open up more spots as well.

Pop could be a force in the ML pen this coming season.

If he’s healthy and performing , I would expect him to be a potential call up by June.

Realistically, he’s a candidate in the second half of the year since he will be rusty but he could move fast.

I don't expect the Orioles to sign many (or really any) free agents to Major League contracts and with that, there is space on the 40-man to protect a number of players. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe we have 5 spots open now which should mean Diaz, Baumann, Lowther, Wells and Pop can all be protected. I would protect Bannon and, maybe, Hanifee as well. There is plenty of guys who you could clear to make room. I expect Nunez to be gone (trade or non-tender). I would be surprised if we moved on from Ruiz (and would be fine with giving Bannon and chance there instead). I could see Alberto moved. I could see Severino moved.

He needs to dominate AAA for at least 3 years before we call him up.  I say bring him up in May 2025 so he’s still under control for our 2031 playoff run.

And Cortes had put up a 1.49 ERA and 10.6 K/9 in 48.1 AAA innings when selected. Which is why again that pitchers like Wells are rarely taken in a rule 5 draft and if they are, they don't last with their new team.

Here's what Elias may be thinking though. The chances of Wells being taken is very slim. If he doesn't put him on the roster, he gets whole other year of protecting Wells without losing an option year. There are several guys right now that he can jettison without concern it better players are DFA'd from other organizations.

Saying that, the Orioles are pretty deep with Wells caliber left-handed starting pitcher with Zimmermann and Kevin Smith the most obvious AA or higher comps. 

I believe Lowther is step ahead of them and Baumann above them all, so the Orioles have a nice crop of readyor nearly ready young starters.

By next August, I could see the Orioles rotation including:
Means
Akin
Kremer
Baumann
Lowther

Zimmermann would be the other guy who could still be in the rotation (I think he's the favorite as a 5th starter right now) with Wells and Smith in the wings.

Some people take rule five guys because they have incredibly high ceilings, but it is my hope that we will take a guy who is major-league ready and can contribute at a legitimate level. 
Santander is the best rule five pick since Mark Canha, But Flaherty Was a valuable piece of the team for a long time.

I’m hoping we can find a third baseman with whom to replace Ruiz. We are apparently set at SS and 2B, So if we get a third baseman, I guess we could spend the next pick on a pitching possibility, but I think we already have lots of those.

      Good, he should cry. His performance the last 3 months including playoffs isnt something that gets forgotten easily. Atleast not for me

      I wonder if Adley's issues are something health related but not necessarily an injury per se.  IIRC we all found out in the offseason that Ced was suffering from Crohn's in.......2020?  2021? 🤔  After Ced was pretty dreadful offensively all that season (whichever year it was). I mean something like that could potentially be at play with Adley.  Health issue but not an "injury."  Maybe something that was medically revealed after the HBP? IDK, spitballing here.

      I tend to agree, I'm not convinced. Cowser had hand/nerve stuff and continued to play his game. Westburg broke his hand, came back, and looked good. Not sure why getting hit on the hand suddenly made Adley swing at trash out of the zone.

      I hate that Adley getting hit on the hand is the excuse why he kept playing and his season went down the crapper, yet Italian Breakfast gets hit on the hand, breaks his thumb and works his ass off to get back to his team in time for the playoffs.    I’m a 50% believer that Adley getting hit on the hand is the reason that he was so bad towards the end of the season, but it still doesn’t explain the drop in OBP. He’s getting down to Adam Jones levels of on base percentage.  His approach seems to be totally different than when he first came up. A hurt hand doesn’t have anything to do with that.

      I watched both the Elias and Hyde press conferences in full and they both get weird around the Adley question. You can feel the hesitation on saying it's not an injury, and the way they kind of squirm around the question. If we can point to the HBP then surely they can do and would have done MRIs if Adley still felt iffy after the x-ray. Unless he's truly hiding it. But it sure feels like all parties know about something and for some reason that makes no sense to me, they aren't divulging it.

      They might not even know. Initial x-rays were negative, it's possible that Adley thought he could just play through it and maybe it wasn't painful, just fatigued? Who knows. But unless Adley tells them (assuming they're not hiding it), nothing they can really do. Wonder if Adley just felt the All Star Break was coming up, so he'd just deal.  I think it's way too obvious of a data point to ignore, personally.
