The battles I want to see in ST

I also don't see Mullins as a threat to Hays.  Hays all be in the lineup.  but I do see a battle between Hays and DJ Stewart.  Not for the same position, odiously....but if Mullins shows he can play up the level of last year, I could see him starting, pushing one of the outfielders to DH leaving Stewart without a space.  Would make us a better defensive team.

Doesn't that make the battle between Mullins and Stewart? Not a bad thought though. Stewart has to hit to keep his job for sure. Yusniel Diaz a threat as well.

I agree.

I was surprised to see MLB.com project Mullins as starting CF over Hays.   I don't put much stock in it...

Hyde said today he lets both of them play through ST and makes a decision before opening day.

They are both going to play plenty. Including being on the field together a fair amount.    But I’m expecting Hays to play more, if he’s healthy.

Which is huge if.   This off season Hays said in an interview that he intends to continue diving and climbing walls.  He says that is just the way he plays.    But its also part of the reason he goes on the IL.  His body gets beat up the way he does it IMO.   I project him plays less than 100 games because he has trouble staying on the field.

You may be right, but I don’t think Hays can or should change his game in that way.

Mullins - Hays competition is off to a big start!

I haven't heard yet whether Mountcastle is practicing any extra 1B in the wake of Davis's back strain, or if the LF horse blinders are on.   It isn't hard to imagine DH Mancini and best defensive OF's just plain better than DH Stewart and a talented fielder on the bench, aside from Trey being maybe not full Ripken in April.

Even before Diaz enters the roster picture.

Agree - I think Hays will play, so the impact of a big spring from Mullins will be more on Stewart.  That said, Stewart off to a pretty good start too!  Only a few games in, but good problems.  Either way I'm looking forward to seeing these guys play even if they do lose 100 games.  At least hope for the future.

O's have six guys for 5 starting position position.   Mancini, Mountcastle, Hays, Mullins, Santander and Stewart for 1B, DH, LF, CF and RF.    I can see Hyde doing a rotation where each guy sits once every six games.  Playing 5 out of 6 games would just keep players rested.

Someone will get injured for a day, a few days or more and that will take care of it.

Just realized that short of injury or Davis miraculously retiring/getting released, there are realistically no open spots for position players.  I can't see them taking less than 13 pitchers, which leaves 13 position players:

C - Severino and Sisco (2)

IF - Mancini, Sanchez, Galvis, Ruiz, Valaika, Davis (6)

OF - Mountcastle, Hays, Santander, Mullins, Stewart (5)

I would really like to see Urias make the team.  He can be a decent reserve, plus has some upside.

    • Luis Gonzalez is on a MiL deal but I think he has a good shot to be added to the 40 man rather than going back to minor league free agency. His AAA numbers are very good and he could be the replacement Vespi up/down lefty. He’ll have all 3 options. Only impediment may be that Krook will still have an option next year and McHough could be added instead, and maybe they’ll want to keep one or both of them and feel that makes Gonzalez redundant.  But Gonzalez has definitely out pitched both.
    • At this time last year, Holliday was still in Aberdeen on his way to a .940 OPS.   He didn’t get promoted to Bowie until July 14, so your comparison is a bit premature.  🙂   Maybe Basallo’s .894 OPS in June and 1.053 OPS so far in July is a better comp?
    • Pls stop with the crusade and ignorance against advanced stats.  During MASN interview earlier this season, Drew French said he pays ZERO attention to ERA and instead prefers FIP.
    • I was very excited by Cunningham given the tools but he’s looking like a non-prospect, he is the biggest disappointment for me. EBJ may not shoot through the minors like our recent high college hitter picks but it hasn’t been all bad. Exactly 100 wRC+ as a 22 year old speed/defense CF in A+ ball. It’s more of the same from his short debut last year with good K/BB rates, and the power hasn’t been terrible relative to expectations, hovering around .100 ISO all year. He just has a much lower BABIP than you would expect for a super fast guy in the low minors, and that’s not a great sign for his line drive contact quality but not a big red flag quite yet. Especially with Cowser showing so well defensively there is no reason to rush EBJ. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in a trade since he likely still has good trade value and is definitely one of the highest profile position players in the second tier of the system where they’re most likely to deal from.
    • He has in the last month but didn’t he have a long streak of no errors?   He’s not an elite fielder but, in the long run, I think he’s solid at 2B or 3B, although the eye test says he looks a little better at 3B.
    • Basallo AND Holliday are both one of, if not THE youngest players in their respective leagues. Their development (Holliday's especially) is always judged based on WHY ARE THEY NOT IN THE BIG LEAGUES OMG WTF. But the truth of the matter is, they are excelling against much older professional baseball players. Jackson Holliday is effectively a sophomore in college. Basallo is a 19 year old in AA OPS'ing .813. Let's pump the brakes a bit on scrutinizing their performances.
    • Totally agree, let's also find things to complain about with our other extremely young and talented prospect! If there's one thing this forum needs more of, in the year 2024 when we are the envy of the entire league, it's complaints.
