Knowing Hays this slight discomfort will result in him being out for 8 weeks.

These were my thoughts when I saw this happen. It didn’t look like a bad pull. Anyone else I wouldn’t expect to miss much time (if any) but with Hays it seems like a multi-week absence is in order.

I like Hays, but he is the Glass Man to Cal's Iron Man.  How many times did Cal play through a sore hamstring, bruises, stiff joints, etc?

How many times did Cal follow up a 11-WAR season and an MVP with hitting .251 with 14 homers?  Streak was cool and all, but man did Cal have some wild swings in performance.

I'm not sure those wild swings in performance would have been quelled with a day off here or there.

Even if he wasn't getting it done with the bat his defense still brought a lot of value.

On your first point... we just don't know.  Could be that he alternated hitting .320 and .250 because he changed his stances every 20 minutes on the advice of Cal Sr.

Second point, yes, his defensive value helped smooth out the curve.

I'm inclined to agree that the changing of the batting stances at the drop of a hat played a part.
