John Means 2021

I thought Means pitched decently last night.   The Yankees fought off a lot of his pitches and he wasn’t quite as crisp as on opening day.   I thought Hyde picked the right time to pull him, even though Means was only one out away from qualifying for the win.    As it turns out, he wouldn’t have gotten the win anyway.

Stanton is unreal. Both of his singles off Means were not driveable pitches and he still hit them with over 100 mph exit velo. Sound weird to say in a game where they gave up 13 hits, but I think everyone pitched well. Armstrong would probably be the exception although he probably should've gotten out of that inning without a run.

Yea, Armstrong didn’t really pitch bad at all.

Road start against a top league offense with a notable RHH lean - Nick Pollack from Pitcher List had the Glass Half Full:

John Means @ NYY (ND) – 4.2 IP, 1 ER, 7 Hits, 2 BBs, 4 Ks – 17 Whiffs, 32% CSW, 93 pitches.

Means held a 20% SwStr on his fastball tonight, tossing it a full tick harder than last time out. Meanwhile, his curveball earned strikes, changeups were effective, and he quelled the Yankee lineup. Oh, and now he gets Seattle and Tex. Does this mean it’s time to celebrate? It’s time.

(vs. MARINERS, 4/13) )))))) [GAME ONE]

Starting pitchers throw fewer innings and have far less complete games today than they did 40 to 50 years ago ...... that said, John Means is the first Orioles pitcher to allow 1 run or fewer in 6 consecutive starts since Hall-of-Famer Jim Palmer in 1978.

A twist of fate may have saved John Means' baseball career when he was 18 years-old ......

When Means was a senior in high school, a scout from the Braves saw Means pitch, which resulted him being drafted in the 46th round of the MLB draft that year. Means planned on signing, figuring that it would be the only time that he would ever get drafted. At the time his fastball sat in the mid-80's, and he had not gotten one single offer of a scholarship from any colleges ...... he figured that the only reason why he was noticed at all was that scouts were at his high school team's games to see somebody else (Means' high school teammate Bubba Starling, who wound up being a 1st-round draft choice that year.) When the scout came to sign Means, John was injured. The scout subsequently recommended that Means go to college instead. Having had no scholarship offers, Means enrolled at a community college and pitched well enough to get a scholarship offer from West Virginia, which was the only Division-I school to offer him a scholarship at that point. Means then developed and grew over the next 2 years to become much more marketable then he had been as a high school boy 3 years earlier, and was subsequently drafted in the 11th round by the Orioles. The signing bonus that Means was offered as an 11-th round pick was enough for him to forgo his senior season at West Virginia, and sign with the Orioles. 3 years older, stronger, more developed, and with a fastball that had increased in velocity to the low-90's, Means now had a much more realistic path to the Majors than he had when the Braves drafted him in the 46th round out of high school. Means figures that if he had signed with the Braves as an 18-year old 3 years earlier, he probably would have met the fate that most low-round draft picks meet ...... 2 years in the lower Minors, and then being released by the team if he had not really sparkled in those 2 years.

In hindsight, Means believes that the injury which resulted in the Braves scout recommending that he got to college instead of taking their low-round draft pick offer probably wound up rescuing his dreams of ever playing Major League baseball.

A little to my surprise - both of today's teams ahead of Tampa in xwOBA year to date so not quite Bottom Two in the DH league (yet?), but I think gems against the Orioles and Rangers on Mancini/Gallo off days get a little bit of an asterisk.   You can only play who is on the schedule though, so good job.

On the other hand, Opening Day Red Sox victims #1 in MLB so that performance wearing beautifully.
