The second guessing Hyde thread.

They are sticking with a five man rotation and not skipping a spot when they have an off day.   Means is on pace for 217 innings if he makes all his starts on that schedule.   No reason at all to throw extra starts at him.

But the next turn they are skipping the 5th starter.

Before we know the results I just wanna say I agree with Hyde taking out Means. Innings have to be managed this year.

It is a no brainer decision playing under National League rules with runners on 2nd and 3rd in a 0-0 or any tied game.

Yep..pitch count wasn’t high but so what?  It was the right call imo.  His stuff wasn’t as good either.  Only 3 Ks and didn’t miss a lot of bats.    He did throw a lot of strikes and was getting some weak contact.  Pitched inside very effectively.

Also needed to get at least one run there.  I didn't have an issue with it either, especially after the 6th inning where he allowed some runners.

Yep..maybe he stays in for another inning if we still weren’t playing by idiotic rules but since they are, Hyde made the right call.

If the game the offense had given us more than a zero run lead, Means would have continued.  Had to pinch hit there, had nothing to do with Means performance and everything to do with this offensive offense's consistent inability to score runs.

From Joe Trezza:

The decision: To hit for López, or not?
Who: Hyde
When: Top of the fifth inning

Given López’s history of fifth-inning struggles, Hyde had a legitimate decision to make when the pitcher walked to the plate in the top of the fifth inning, with the bases loaded and two out in a scoreless game. At least that’s how it seemed.

It was only the ninth career plate appearance for López, who has spent most of his career in the American League. And not only were the Orioles desperate for offense, but they appeared to have Strasburg on the ropes.

“It was not much of a decision the way our bullpen was tonight,” Hyde said. “I know he’s had trouble in the middle part of the game, but I was trying to push him there. We just did not have many innings in the bullpen tonight, so he needed to go back out.”

López struck out to end the inning, surrendered two runs in the bottom of the frame and was lifted after five anyway.

I spent some time looking up Lopez’ work this season in an effort to support my argument that Hyde leaves his starters in too long. Yesterday was just a continuation of what Hyde has been doing all season. Lopez’ pitch count was a little lower than his usual but there was still no acceptable reason to leave him in.

If the bullpen is really that bad, that’s another problem, but it doesn’t justify the decision.

Hyde shouldn’t get another contract. I think he was signed for three years and he’s being tried and found wanting.

They have 14 pitchers and he is worried about pen usage. How many arms should they have?

If the pen is on fumes how does yanking starters earlier help? You can’t just ignore that portion of the conversation.

First of all, Hyde has been doing it all season.

secondly, even in the best case scenario, he was only going to get one or two additional outs before going to the bullpen anyway.

That doesn’t save anything, Hyde would STILL have to go to the pen. So he only makes the problem worse. Almost every time. That the bullpen isn’t good right now is irrelevant, because you know before the game that even in the best case, you need four innings from the pen.

And with a scuffling pen, isn’t it better by far to start with a clean inning and minimize damage from mistakes as much as possible?

Finally, in the NL there was no reason to send a guaranteed out to the plate. So not only was Hyde holding his starter in too long, he was wasting an at bat with RISP.

    • Really nice to see the pitchers progressing with a solid crew from 5-8.
    • I think you are underselling the month. Would you be unhappy if they went 3-3 to start this?  I’m honestly not expecting more than that.
    • If they play well we have a great shot to put a little distance between us and the Yankees.  That would be a great story line going into the ASB.
    • The discussion in the offseason was, if you trade one, who do you trade. I kept going back and forth on the answer but my ultimate thought process was that Cowser is the better all around player but Kjerstad’s best tool, his power, is better than any single tool Cowser has. I still basically stand by that thought.    This is a long winded way of saying Kjerstad’s power is just better than Cowser’s, so he definitely can get away with things that Cowser can’t. You have pointed out a lot of warning track outs for Cowser. I would suspect many of those would be homers off of Kjerstad’s bat.
    • The panic is crazy.  Of course we need to upgrade for a WS run, that’s the prudent thing to do.  But the panic is just that, emotional thinking causing lapse in judgement. We are 4th in all MLB in ER given up, 3rd in era, & 3rd in FIP.  The pitching is doing quite well.    I keep hearing that Elias has done nothing about the pitching.  But here we are as one of the elite pitching teams in baseball right now and below is what Fangraphs had to say about the system.  Why are people still saying our organization has ignored pitching? Why are people suggesting trading potential generational talent for mediocre pitching upgrades?  There are so many interesting pitchers in this system that it was tough to include them all. There’s an org we’re aware of whose scouts need to write a full report on a player if he touches 95 in front of them. If you’re a scout from that team covering Baltimore, you’ve had to write up more than 80 pitchers based on their peak velo alone. The retaining wall of arms is strong in the upper levels, giving the Orioles the pitching depth to contend amid injuries.
    • I never like getting ahead of myself, or assume we will dominate bad teams.  I know we had one poster who was saying we really should sweep Houston.  Uh, yeah.    But honestly, we’re a .630 winning percentage team, and this is a soft part of our schedule.  15-10 would disappoint me greatly.  16-9 would be okay but a missed opportunity.
    • So you give up 2 top 100 prospects for 2 seasons and a limited second half? I’m glad you’re not in control. I know we’re currently a bit spoiled with the tanking and better front office. But I don’t see why you’d want to give up 3-4 players that include 2 of those guys.
