Valdez gave up a ground ball that our "glove first" third baseman misplayed, a ground ball that got through because Mancini was holding the runner, a soft fly ball and another ground ball. When your closer isn't Aroldis Chapman and your IF and catcher defense is questionable these games will happen.

Like I said, it was a group loss. Valdez didn't quite have the movement of his pitches but everything you said matches what I wrote. 3B, 2B and C on this team are below replacement level right now.

Ruiz should have caught the ball, but it was hit real hard. So was the drive by Pillar that was foul by maybe a foot. Smith's hit was legitimate. There weren't many swings and misses.

Yeah Valdez was not responsible for this one. Defense failed big time.

No way it was not a good throw. Even a perfect throw it would have been really close

The throw was way high. If it had been lower by a couple feet there might have been a chance. But yeah you’re right, it was not as bad as I initially thought.

I don't get the post-game. Did anyone ask Hyde why the OF was medium-deep with one out and a fast guy on third representing the winning run. It's incomprehensible to me. This is supposed to be a ML team, even if it is a real bad ML team.

I must have missed that, did they show the outfield positioning on the broadcast?
