Jones and Bannon for Franco and Ruiz?

Thoughts on this?  Is this a switch you would make?

Are you ready to give up on Franco?  Too early?

For me, I would make the switch now..I would cut Ruiz.  I would keep Franco for now as insurance.

I'd wait until at least Memorial Day. Bannon is playing ok at AAA but I'm not convinced he's an everyday guy. Saying that, Franco has been pretty awful overall so I'm not against them going in a different direction, but I'd give Franco at least two months before cutting him.

Jones is pretty questionable defensively at 2B so be careful what you wish for here. He's hit the ball ok, but he looks a little stiff over at 2B and doesn't have great hands or arm. I kinda think they ought to just play either Valaika or Urias every day at 2B for two weeks and see what happens. Ruiz is not the answer to anything.

I tend to agree that neither of these guys are long term options although I want to see if Jones can improve his defense.

I also agree about Franco.  I would bring up Bannon to take some playing time from him and if Franco is still looking bad in a month or so, I would probably drop him then.

For now, taking some at bats from him is fine with me.

Tony, Jones hasn't been in the lineup the last 2 games. Any word on an injury?

Yeah, I don't really have a strong opinion here one way or the other. I'd still probably want to give Franco two months to see if he can right the ship, but if they released him tomorrow I wouldn't really care. I'd like to see Jones have at least two months in the minors at second base unless he just starts dominating with the bat in AAA.

Honestly, I wouldn't be the worse thing in the world to give Cumberland a chance and send Sisco back to the minors. Cumberland is not much better defensively but maybe he can give a little bit of offense.

So not until July for Jones in your opinion.

If the MiL season had started on time I might be up for promoting Jones and/or Bannon by now if they were performing reasonably well.   As things stand, 9 days into the minor league season, I agree with Tony that Memorial Day is a more likely time to consider those types of moves.

Jones is horrible on defense. Or at least he’s “questionable” which in oriolespeak means the same thing.

I don’t mind getting rid of Franco right now, And I enthusiastically second Tony’s suggestion to send Sisco down in lieu of Cumberland.... maybe he can fill in the gap, hahaha.

The guys who have had multiple years to establish their parameters don’t need “till memorial day” because they’ve had their whole careers to show what they are. That means that Franco can go, because there are no mysteries about his ability. Ruiz, too.

I'm definitely not a scout but I'm hoping Gunnar is pushing some of the other players out of this way as the MiL season progresses. Certain guys just "look" different when they're on the field with everyone else.

Mason McCoy also has an OPS over .940 at Norfolk and should be better with the glove at 2B if Elias doesn't trust Jones. Richie Martin has a .659 OPS, so he's still looking bad at the plate. But thats four options Elias has for the infield.

    • Wieters' bWAR was 13.3 through his first 4 seasons (2009 - 2012).  It ended at 18.3 after his last season in 2020, so he was basically ineffective for the last 8 years of his career. Adley's bWAR is 13.1 through his first 3 seasons. So it isn't like Wieters didn't have a strong start to his career just like Adley did.  I think the concern that folks have is that the rest of Adley's career will play out like the rest of Wieters' career.  It seemed very unlikely halfway through this year, but this has been one hell of a drop-off.   And after Wieters never lived up to expectations, it is definitely a fear that we may be reliving this again.  Let's hope this second half was just an aberration.
    • Adley has been in a horrible almost 4 month slump. Before that, he was the WAY BETTER offensive player. But I pose this question: What does it matter if Rutschman turns out to be worse than Wieters? Matt Wieters was drafted almost TWENTY YEARS AGO. No one in this org had anything to do with him being on our roster. HEck none of our current front office was even here for his entire Orioles' career.
    • I do feel like Adley is out of shape or at least has gotten more out of shape than usual. That’s part of the reason I think he’s hurt…not working out as much. If he is healthy and the slump is this bad, I’m ok questioning whether or not the new GF(ie the distraction) is part of it. Is he putting everything into the game that he should?
    • Can they? - Yes it's possible. Anything is possible.  Will they? - I have my doubts. The team was abysmal (minus Cedric Mullins and O'Hearn's pinch hit appearance) with the bat in their hands yesterday. And for many of our hitters this was nothing more than a continuation/carryover from the second half of the season.
    • Right now Geronimo Gil is better than Adley.  But I'm not gonna kick Adley while he's down.  Let him get a reset, work on some things in the offseason, and hope that this 2nd half ends up being just an aberration in a good career.
    • Which is crazy since they put 7 on the board vs Ragans hitting all singles. They had an approach that worked and then they went away from it.
    • It’s what this board does.
