Has Anderson De Los Santos has been the early surprise for Orioles 1 ?

Hitting .333/385./625.  Moved from short to 3rd base.  $350,000 bonus

For Orioles 2 Bencosme has been playing short and hitting .350/435./600.  He is 18, not 17.  But his 1st year in pro ball.  Don't think he got a 6 figure bonus.

Well you hear about internationals that only got a 5 figure bonus that way over produced.  Benscosme could be one.

Orioles 1 loses 6 to 2. Falls to 4 and 9.

Looks like they have the better prospects.  Basilio, Hernandez, De Los Santos had good days at the plate.

Orioles 2 wins 1 to 0.  Improves to 7 and 8.  Nobody on the radar here yet. Just a Competitive team.

Now that it’s been a few weeks, here’s how our big bonus babies in the DSL are doing so far.  All these guys have only 25-50 PA, so take it with a grain of salt.

DSL 1:

C Sammy Basallo, 16, $1.3 mm - .268/.348/.390

SS Maikol Hernandez, 17, $1.2 mm - .167/.308/.214

RF Wilmer Feliciano, 17, $400 K - .225/.311/.325

3B/SS Anderson de los Santos, 17, $350 k - .317/.429/.537

DSL 2:

C Yasmil Bucce, 16, $300 K - .143/.333/.179

3B/SS Eruviel Castillo, 17, $350 K - .304/.429/.391

SS/2B Victor Celedonio, 17, $360 K - .148/.378/.333

LF Teudis Cortorreal, 17, $350 K - .256/.319/.372

Really nice start for the 16-year old Basallo (he's hit of late after a slow start) but an equally disappointing start for Hernandez even though his 9-8 BB-K ratio is obviously excellent. But, like you said it's early and numbers in the DSL always should be taken with a huge grain of salt. Hopefully they are both pushed to the FCL next year.

In the DSL, pitchers average 9.3 K/9, 5.3 BB/9.   So, 1.8 K/BB is average for a hitter.

But the DSL is chock full of filler right?

How do you parse the data?

I would think that anyone promising is going to be putting up numbers well above average.

I don’t really know.   Here are the former DSL numbers of 5 batters in the bottom part of Fangraphs’ preseason top 130 list:

Ezequiel Duran: 15 K’s, 3 BB (15 games)

Heriberto Hernandez: 41 K’s, 53 BB (60 games)

Kevin Alcantara: 9 K’s, 5 BB (9 games)

Leody Taveras: 5 K’s, 6 BB (11 games)

Liover Peguero: 12 K’s, 6 BB (22 games)

Kind’ve all over the lot.

For what it's worth I compared Yankees 1 to our teams.  They have MUCH BETTER stats.  But they're older.  More like 19 years old.  Our guys are typically 17 and just signed up January 15.

One day we should catch and pass the Yankees internationally.  Every year our international bonus pool is larger than theirs.  For being a small market/small revenue team.

Plus when the Yankees splurge on someone like Cole they lose draft dollars and international dollars.

Interesting (to me) the Yankees only have one FCL team.  With all the depth they have.

Pitcher Luis Sanchez has been demoted from FCL Orioles Orange to DSL Orioles 1.

He received a $200,000 bonus in November 2019.  Of course 2020 was lost with Covid.  Just overwhelmed in the FCL with no professional experience.

$200,000 is the 3rd highest bonus to a pitcher that i'm aware of.

Luis Ortiz $400.000

Moises Chace. $225. 000

.Luis Sanchez. ,$200,000

Devi Cruz $200,000

  • 2 weeks later...

Ronnie Martinez is finally sighted.

$235,000 signing bonus in November 2019.

6', 185 lbs playing right field batting 4th for Orioles 1.  2 for 2 today.  7 for 16 overall.  3 for 4 in steals.  Orioles announced 6 late 2019 signings in February 2020.  Bonuses ranged from $235,000 to $10,000.

Without knowing more, I put a lot of stock on the size of the bonus.

BA called center fielder Junior Lara a "sleeper" worth watching.  $160,000 bonus.   6' 160lbs.  Bats left throws left.

He played 1 game ,opening day I think.  2 for 5 with a steal.  Hasn't played since.

Seems like there are a lot of cancellations and missing players down there this year.  I wonder are they sick with Covid or suffering lengthy down time with injuries

Ronnie Martinez only started playing in the 7 days.  Injured or sick ?
