Question:  if the O's are not able to sign him, can they use his slot money (roughly $800K) to sign someone else in later rounds?   It sounds like he will return to college if he doesn't get a high enough bonus, which makes sense for him given that he had an off-season in 2021.

I will say that it doesn't look like Elias is selecting guys in the draft with the idea that they will someday be in the rotation.

Who knows at this point.  The sons have operated in an area where their dad was not willing to go (J2), so it is anyone’s guess what they do.  

However, since 2000, the Orioles have had a top 10 payroll more often than not, so I think they do open up the checkbook when we get closer to a window but again…….it’s just a guess.

It isn’t true that we’ve had a top 10 payroll more often than not since 2000.   Quite the opposite.   Not sure where you got that idea.

Everyone says we are going to have to out smart the other organizations.  Well, he sure is trying something new here and I like it.  Pitchers taking shorter deals and pitching strategies changing completely is changing the market and players value.  With pitchers going fewer and fewer innings their value goes down.  Try to hit on a home grown arm, trade for a stud with surplus, and sign some short term deals   It will be interesting to see what Phase 2 is.  I suppose the first trade for P or P FA signing will trigger Phase 2.   Next few years are going to be exciting.

I think they have an agreement, in rough outline form, already in place with all of the first ten picks.

I’ll need to look into it more since I am out of town but I had an argument with a Mets fan years ago on another forum about our ownership groups and not spending money, but I found the statement I made to be true of both teams when I looked at the yearly payroll numbers.

Seems like the O's out-smarted themselves - particularly on this pick.  This was the most confusing O's pick - not just picking yet another OFer, but going likely over-slot for someone who didn't hit well.

Well, he didn't hit well last year. He hit well in high school, his truncated freshman year and in the wood bat summer league in 2020. Apparently he fell in love with the long ball this year, and while he hit more of those, his average suffered. I am guessing the O's see something that they can fix and he can can bring some of those numbers back up with some adjustments. Maybe even while retaining some of that newfound power. I think he's done a lot of things well, just not necessarily at the same time. Haha.

I have no clue how this pick is going to turn out, but I think its an interesting one. I think they are betting on some of that production returning from before 2021. Whether that's the right approach...I guess we will find out.

I have a feeling they make some exciting trades to bolster(start to build) the rotation next year.  Means, FA, Trade acquisition, the rest in house.  Try to pick up another SP via Trade & FA the following year and fill out the pen with the SP rejects.

I'd be quite surprised to see all that before next year.   But we are in unknown territory, so who knows.
