I came here to raise the concern about the pitch count but I thought it was 72 through four innings, which is not good. But if it’s 72 in 5, that’s not bad at all.

I don’t get this. Pitch count alone is not representative of a bad game. He had only given up a run at the time of your post. He still could pitch into the 6th only having given up a run.

Still only at 80. Might get thru 6.

OK, we have a lead and we have 4 innings to cover.   Our options:

Wells -- 9th inning.  He didn't throw many pitches last night.   Seems obvious.

That leaves 3 innings.  Our choices are:

  • Try to get another inning out of Akin
  • 1 or more innings out of Lopez
  • Fry for an inning
  • Scott for an inning 2nd day in a row (13 p last night)
  • Sulser for an inning 2nd day in a row (18p last night)
  • Tate for an inning 2nd day in a row (19p last nigth)

What's your call.  How do you cover the 6th thru the 8th, assuming we all agree on Wells for the 9th.

You may be right, but if you are throwing a lot of pitches it’s because players are succeeding in fouling them off, so he’s not throwing deceptively enough to fool them, and he’s not throwing hard enough to blow it past them, and he’s not throwing with enough movement to induce weak contact? I don’t know how a guy induces weak contact but Britton did it like clockwork.

Things just got a lot easier!
