I think that’s his best role at the moment.

Not saying he couldn’t get better but we shouldn’t be developing him in the majors.

I'm pretty OK with developing him in the majors.  Why not they are going to lose anyway.

The question is, do you think he can actually develop into a useful starting pitcher?

I think folks got a bit too high on him last year, but hey, you have to get excited about something right?

I think if he’s in the majors, you double down on his best role, which I think is multi inning reliever.

    • Pretty funny that you talk about fear mantras.  Who is the one talking about “disastrous”, “not likely to go deep in the playoffs”, “limited ceiling like TB and Cleveland”, and so on? Great leadership starts at the top.  Great leaders realize they are not experts in a particular field and take the advice of their top experts.
    • I know you and I have our different viewpoints and have our fair share of running disagreements. But I respect you opinion(s) believe it or not. Question - Let's just say (I'm not saying this will happen) but if we were to re-sign Santander to a 3-4 year market contract (I would argue we can more than afford since we are literally paying NO ONE). If that were to happen, doesn't that make one of Mayo or Basallo expendable? I say Santander because he is the kind of player (who is not a star) but you can project extracting value from him. Because in any era where counting stats are a little devalued, he gives you consistent home runs and rbis but not much OBP and some of his statcast numbers aren't that great. Plus he's a historical slow starter and a very streaky hitter, but he gives you that clutch/big game element as well. Is it possible that he is a late bloomer along the lines of say a Nelson Cruz/David Ortiz (obviously not as good as Ortiz)? Just something to think/talk about...
    • A lot of it is folks didn't move down here being dedicated fans of whatever hockey team was their former home team. I don't see Islander hats, I don't see Penguin Hats, ect ect. It's a lot easier to make someone a Lightning fan if they don't have another allegiance. Before the Rays were here this area was mostly known for being the Spring Training home of the Yankees. Just yesterday I talked with a Philly fan and a Mets fan.
    • Well if we trade Westburg, we still have Ortiz and really aren’t any worse off.
    • It was prior ownership that mentioned wanting to follow the Rays model. The only thing Rubenstein has said is that he wants to bring a WS back to Baldimore and he's going to support Elias' vision in doing that. 2 and a half months isn't enough to judge what Rubenstein's plans are. We've seen him supporting the club more in that time than we did the entire time JA was running the show.
    • I agree you don't want to go overboard, especially on rentals who will be gone after two months. However, within reason you do what you can to give yourself the best chance. Arguably Texas did go all in by signing Degrom.
    • A big picture thing I wonder about is is Elias such a data gatherer and decision deferrer that he places any value on a view of the next CBA before making any of the biggest decisions. Is there expansion?     Does the MLBPA fight for service time revisions?     Does the league fight for a cap? I have very very low expectations, but for Orioles fans enjoying this roster it would be nice if the parties could not encumber the 2026-2027 winter with the dreadful stuff.     That possible timeline would put Adley 1 year away from free agency circa 3.15.2027 when the MLB and MLBPA announce agreement barely in time for an abbreviated spring training and without loss of any of the 162. What if you have two top-tier contracts for 2030 but aren't sure if Mayo or Basallo will leapfrog Holliday the same as Gunnar has perhaps leapfrogged Adley? A club can still win their franchise player on the open market as NYY did with Judge.
