Aberdeen Pitching

The Ironbirds are 6th in the Sally league in ERA (4.86), but their stats don't add up to that sort of ERA:

1.31 WHIP is 5th

3.20 BB/9 is by far the best

only 4 WP, while every other team in the league has between 11 and 25 (+++ for Pavalony?)

3.81 K to BB ratio which is the best in the league by far where the median is 2.24 and the #3 team is 2.80

I don't have doubles and triples allowed or OBP/SLG against, but it looks like the results should improve for the Aberdeen staff if they continue to pitch as well as they have.

Does anyone know if Aberdeen is considered to be an extreme hitter's or pitcher's park?

Aberdeen is an extreme pitcher's park. The power alleys and center field are cavernous and the ball does not carry very well.

I might sound egregious for this, but I wish they had kept Frederick at A+. Really see what the pitchers can do at that launching pad. Plus, the line up would probably be putting up 20 a game.

I believe your instincts are good, but have you seen any analytics in minor-league parks that would support that in terms of run expectation, say.  Is it possible, for example, that Aberdeen had a different spot on the totem pole of NYP parks than it does in the Sally league?

I posted in another thread that, per Baseball America, it was neutral in the NYP League in 2019 but was an extreme pitchers park through the first half of last year. If someone with a Baseball America subscription can check the full season 2021 park factors, that would be helpful.

I'm surprised Aberdeen is not worse, but then again, if you can pull the ball down the lines its not that far.

Those were for runs.  The HR factors are:

Norfolk - 80

Bowie - 135

Aberdeen - 73

Delmarva - 94

BABIP Park factor

Norfolk - 92

Bowie - 99

Aberdeen - 100

Delmarva - 93

Ahh, now the HR factor makes more sense.

The Ironbirds are tied for 3rd in most homers allowed in the Sally League, with 20.   That probably explains why their ERA is a bit out of line with WHIP and some of the other stats.

Outisde of Pinto, the Ironbirds may not have another legitimate pitching prospect. Maybe Tavera but still early on.

I assume you just mean starting pitching prospect?

    • I see a playoff team with maybe the same expectations the 2023 team had going into the season. Possibly being picked to finish between 2nd and 4th in our division.     SP - Eflin, Grayson, Big Al, Kremer, Povich McDermott in AAA. Bradish and Means back in the 2nd half????  Wells too? RP - Bautista, Cano, Dominguez, Soto, Coloumbe, Webb, Perez, Akin 1B - Mountcastle DH - O’Hearn 2B - Holliday 3B - Westburg SS - Gunnar C - Adley LF - Cowser CF - Mullins RF - Kjerstad Bench - Mateo, Urias, backup C, RH OF or Mayo Basallo up mid season This is us baby.  We are who we are.  The only way to get experience is to actually get experience. Sorry to Brad Fuller maybe our “vet” can be a former player as hitting coach.  Carlos Beltran or Bonds.
    • I would love to sign any hitters who have actually experienced postseason success and wins.....maybe even championships.  Gurriel for KC has been a part of a lot of postseason wins and having veterans on the team like that are valuable.  I saw somewhere the KC guys said they really benefitted from having Gurriel, Pham, Sal Perez, and others who have been there and done that.  Continuing to rely on young players with nothing but zeroes on their postseason resumes isn't helpful.   I heard Francona is going to manage the Reds.  Great move for them.  I would have loved to have him, given he is a Hall of Famer with actual WS championships and a ton of October success.
    • Geordie Greep just dropped The New Sound. So that.
    • Crazy to lose to the same city in all three sports with two to be considered monumental upsets. I believe the Knicks were actually favored against the Bullets, but not sure as it was before I was born.
    • That entire series very much hurt. Benitez was awful. He hung a slider to Grissom (the eventual ALCS MVP) allowing a go-ahead homer in the top of the 8th of game 2. The squeeze play you mentioned that I haven't been convinced wasn't foul in game 3. Game 4 had two of their guys score on the same wild pitch where it looked like David Justice blocked Lenny Webster after scoring the first of those two runs. And then of course, the last hanging slider from Armando to Tony Fernandez that proved to be the game winner in game 6. Just painful all around.
    • More attendance than the playoff games.
    • Just Burnes and Soto for me. That’s all. 🤪
