Time to DFA Paul Fry?

Building on his disastrous second half, Fry's ERA now stands at 10.29, with 6 BB's in 7 innings. Appears nothing has changed. I know it is early but at what point is enough enough?

If we want to replace him with another lefty, I believe Lowther is the only option currently on the 40-man, but he isn't doing great either. Other possibilities are Vespi, who some had making the team out of spring training, or Kevin Smith. Fry does have options remaining.

My guess is Travis Lakins Sr will be optioned to make room for Bradish.

Elias would have to be ready to call up someone  from the minors who is not of the 40 man roster to DFA Fry.  And Stowers and Grayson are probably several weeks away from a call up.

Currently Perez and Akin are lefty relievers with Fry.   I guess at some point they could call up Vespi to take Fry's place.  Lowther has pitched so poorly I don't expect to see him in the majors until he pitches well in the minors for a while.

Unless you have someone in the minors that you need to get a look at in the majors why bother DFA'ing someone?

If you are just going to replace Fry with another warm body I don't see the point.

Vespi is crushing it at Norfolk. Of course, I assume we’re trying to win.

As I said, Vespi and Smith could be interesting and probably should be up at some point this year anyway. I would be OK with the risk of someone claiming Fry to give one of those two a chance. Lowther would be the natural replacement but I'm not sure throwing him back in against big league bats is the best move for his development right now. Could do Diplan or Gillaspie without a 40 man move. That would alter the L/R balance but maybe that doesn't matter.

Fry should not have been offered a contract last year. They could have resigned him on a minor league deal but the way he collapsed last year was a huge red flag.

And yes, Vespi is the guy I'd bring up though they could consider giving Kevin Smith a shot in that role. Fry will easily make it through waivers if Smith made it through.

He has completely fallen apart since the spider tack ban.

You're not kidding.

I don't think we need to call in Holmes and Watson to solve this mystery.

Were I in charge, I wouldn't be re-signing pitchers who fell off of a cliff ten minutes after a strict foreign substance check-and-ban went into effect, but then again, I don't work for the Baltimore Orioles either  🤷‍♂️

    • He’s 24, under team control until 2030, and proven big league performer. They might trade him - it would cost us a fortune.
    • I see a playoff team with maybe the same expectations the 2023 team had going into the season. Possibly being picked to finish between 2nd and 4th in our division.     SP - Eflin, Grayson, Big Al, Kremer, Povich McDermott in AAA. Bradish and Means back in the 2nd half????  Wells too? RP - Bautista, Cano, Dominguez, Soto, Coloumbe, Webb, Perez, Akin 1B - Mountcastle DH - O’Hearn 2B - Holliday 3B - Westburg SS - Gunnar C - Adley LF - Cowser CF - Mullins RF - Kjerstad Bench - Mateo, Urias, backup C, RH OF or Mayo Basallo up mid season This is us baby.  We are who we are.  The only way to get experience is to actually get experience. Sorry to Brad Fuller maybe our “vet” can be a former player as hitting coach.  Carlos Beltran or Bonds.
    • I would love to sign any hitters who have actually experienced postseason success and wins.....maybe even championships.  Gurriel for KC has been a part of a lot of postseason wins and having veterans on the team like that are valuable.  I saw somewhere the KC guys said they really benefitted from having Gurriel, Pham, Sal Perez, and others who have been there and done that.  Continuing to rely on young players with nothing but zeroes on their postseason resumes isn't helpful.   I heard Francona is going to manage the Reds.  Great move for them.  I would have loved to have him, given he is a Hall of Famer with actual WS championships and a ton of October success.
    • Geordie Greep just dropped The New Sound. So that.
    • Crazy to lose to the same city in all three sports with two to be considered monumental upsets. I believe the Knicks were actually favored against the Bullets, but not sure as it was before I was born.
    • That entire series very much hurt. Benitez was awful. He hung a slider to Grissom (the eventual ALCS MVP) allowing a go-ahead homer in the top of the 8th of game 2. The squeeze play you mentioned that I haven't been convinced wasn't foul in game 3. Game 4 had two of their guys score on the same wild pitch where it looked like David Justice blocked Lenny Webster after scoring the first of those two runs. And then of course, the last hanging slider from Armando to Tony Fernandez that proved to be the game winner in game 6. Just painful all around.
