For the record, if he spends the rest of the year in the majors, Rutschman will earn 138 days of service this year, 2.138 by the end of 2024.  Here’s a list of the Super 2 cutoffs since 2009:

2021: 2.116 June 13

2020: 2.125 June 4

2019: 2.115 June 14

2018: 2.134 May 26

2017: 2.123 June 6

2016: 2.131 May 29

2015: 2.130 May 30

2014: 2.133 May 27

2013: 2.122 June 7

2012: 2.140 May 20

2011: 2.146 May 14

2010: 2.122 June 7 

2009: 2.139 May 21

As you can see, the trend since 2013 is for the Super 2 cut off to be lower than Rutschman’s projected 2.138.   But that trend might reverse a bit with the new CBA encouraging earlier debuts to a modest extent.   We’ll find out 29 months from now.

Not worried about Super 2 but I thought he was superhuman and came down from Mount Olympus. Now I  find out he is only human.Not a god like Zues,Mercury and Kim Kardashian.

That trend would indicate more teams holding back their players, likely for financial reasons, since 2013.  However, that isn’t the case this year.  Seeing as this date has come into play before and we are right around it, I think it’s fair to say the Os had some plan for it and figure there’s a chance that he isn’t a super 2.

Of course, they could have waited a little longer to ensure it but they likely have some way of figuring it out.

I think it is interesting that Nolan Gorman and Matt Liberatore got called up the day before.

Might very well be a coincidence or maybe their computer spat out the same projected date?

I think it’s just really hard to predict it in advance, because many players who eventually reach 2-3 years of service don’t take a linear path to get there.   They’re in the majors, they’re back in the minors, and so on for a couple of years.  I bet if I looked at who the Super 2’s were this year, there’s probably a good percentage of them who fit that category.

Sure but I think it’s probably pretty easy to take an educated guess based off of the data they have and how it’s done.

I looked into this, and believe that 2013 was the year that the percentage of 2-3 year players who qualify as Super 2 increased from 17 to 22.   So that explains why the cutoff date has generally been later starting in 2013.    It’s not that the teams suddenly got more clever.
