What evidence do you have that he will get to the majors faster as a 17th round pick vs a top two round pick next year?   He could go to school for another year and still get to the majors the same year he would have had he signed this year.

Keep in mind they’re only going to actually get 50% of whatever the bonus is between taxes and fees. I think starting your career with a good amount of money in the bank to help kick you off and a college degree, isn’t a bad choice.

Absolutely agree with this. Look through the past first-rounders in BaseballReference and see how many never made it to the majors, so never got a chance to even get to arbitration, much less a big contract. And that's just first-rounders, where teams seem more motivated to push to the majors just to show the team didn't completely err when picking them. Athletics in general are a gamble, but baseball especially is a beast given how many levels you need to succeed at before you get to the one that actually pays you. Putting yourself in a position to take as much as you can guaranteed right away, and hope you get lucky in the future with your health, skills, and opportunity seems to be the surer play.

He lasted this long into the draft because his number was too high for most teams knowing he wanted to attend LSU. The Orioles appears to have tried a 17th rounder (the definition of a lottery ticket) on him in the hopes that they could maybe sway him with the money they had left over. 

He decided not to.

I've heard about the tools but at the end of the day, the kid didn't perform very well last year overall besides hitting a few bombs. Good luck to him.

Totally agree with this.  Almost no 17th or 18th rounder will ever make it.  Why not take a flyer on a guy and then hope that you can save enough in the first 10 rounds to woo him?

Exactly, and you're hoping maybe having 800k presented in reality, along with starting your pro career, and not having to write any more college papers, will sway them off of the 1.5 number they quoted during the draft*
