Nolan Reimold’s forgotten moment

We always hear about “the Andino game” and “curse of the Andino.”  But for me, the most momentous at bat of that Red Sox game was Nolan Reimold’s.   He’s up there with a runner on, down by one, and if he’s out, we lose.   Much more pressure on him than on Andino, IMO.   He responds with a double in the gap and not only has he tied the game, he’s now in scoring position.   And only then does Andino come up, in a “can’t lose” situation against a deflated closer who’s just blown the save.   And he hits a flare to LF that quite honestly, Crawford should have caught.   He’s dining out on that hit 11 years later, but who even remembers that Reimold got the tying RBI and scored the winning run?

I remember!!!! Reimold, when healthy, was a hell of a hitter. 
 

Unfortunately he was never healthy.

Reimold was one of my favorite all-time Orioles.  I remember when he got hot at AAA and got called up.  I believe he homered off of Mariano Rivera in one of his first few games to pretty much dead center.   Then he got off to the hot start the one year and hurt his neck and was never the same.  A real shame.

Reimold had promise and if he hadn't been so injury prone I think he could have had a long successful career.

No problem.  He was drafted by the Orioles.  He had speed, power, and a good arm.  And speaking of hustling (the Mancini inside the park thread), Reimold didn't run hard to 1B, he ran 100% on every ground ball or just about every ground ball.    He wasn't the greatest outfielder but he was one of my favorites.

The dinger off Rivera was a fantastic moment.  It's a shame that he could never stay healthy because he had the chance to be a really good player.

Probably best left unsaid,  but I remember there was some scandal involving him when he was in the MiLs with a woman who was his fiancee at the time I believe.  Reimold was not accused of any wrongdoing, far from it, but I am glad to see he has seemingly found happiness in family life.

Same woman, I believe.  I think I heard they reconciled.  We But don’t take my word for it.  
A friend of mine ran into the Mrs. and a few of their kids on an airplane up from Florida once.   Said the kids were adorable.  They didn’t have 7 at the time, maybe 2 or 3.

There was a time when the Nolan Reimold fan club was a definite thing on the board.

 

I remember commenting when he retired that at least he wouldn’t be in the active threads any longer …. Hmmmm.

Mancini sorta feels like the Reimold we never got. Minus the speed of course. I view them as similar hitters though.

Had Reimold stayed healthy, I think he would have been a better hitter than Mancini.  Not by leaps and bounds, but IIRC he had better plate discipline.

I was just teasing you though, because he had such a minor, forgettable career that I find it hard to believe anyone considers him one of their favorite O's of all-time.  Unless he signed an autograph for you when you were a kid or something, but I'm pretty sure you're not that young.

Some of my favorite Orioles are Pete Stanicek, Nate McLouth, Jack Cust, RC Gonzalez (but not Rene), Jim Dwyer, Jack Voigt, Luis Mercedes, Dave Dellucci, Harry Berrios, Cal Pickering, Jon Knott, JR House, and Willis Otanez.

Unfortunately not.   I'm 62.   My first favorite Oriole was Brooks, then Palmer.   After that I can't say I really had any favorites.   Of course, Eddie and Cal and I would say Boddicker was another favorite.   I still credit Boddicker for that 83 Series.   He pitched great down the stretch, won a game against the White Sox and pitched the most important game of the WS.   We lost the first game.  Boddicker pitched a great game in game 2 and the rest is history.    

I'm not sure what it was about Reimold.  Perhaps there were so few homegrown stars around his time and it looked like he might be one.   He looked the part.
