" Early Tuesday, after midnight New York time, Cashman received a telephone call from Boras stating that Teixeira's preference was to play for the Yankees, the person said."

Because the Orioles weren't an option with their lowball offer...

How about this account:

With the focus of every signing or trade being on the rivalry between the Yankees and the Red Sox, this needs to be said first about the Yankees’ signing of Mark Teixeira. The Yankees didn’t snatch him away from the Red Sox because they outbid or outsmarted the Red Sox. Teixeira didn’t sign with the Red Sox, a baseball official said, because he and his wife, especially his wife, didn’t want to live in Boston. If necessary, they were going to choose the big bad city of New York, and they did.

“He just didn’t want to go to Boston,” the official said. “He didn’t want to be a Red Sox so Boras called the Yankees and said he really wants to be a Yankee.”

Sounds to me like he only wanted to be a Yankee so he could avoid going to Boston...

So, why didn't he want to go to the Nats?

He had no ties to them and they were further away from winning than the Orioles were. The Orioles had the prospects that were close and could have added more pitching...

Just read that article. He didn't want to go to Boston so he got the Yankees involved because he knew they'd pay him the money...

The Orioles didn't step up to the plate when they had a chance. The FO totally blew it by lowballing him...

Read into this as little as you want but I was told there is a good chance out first baseman will be either Eric Hinske or Sean Casey.

That is just stupid and pathetic, IMO. What the heck is wrong with letting Huff play first and letting Reimold/Scott split between DH/LF.

These two guys will almost certainly have no contribution to a winning Orioles ballclub and do nothing for the 2009 team either.

Signing either of these guys is just stupid, lazy and inexcusable.

He had no ties with the O's either. The Sox had to go to his home in TEXAS to talk to him, and he hasnt really been here since his HS days. The hometown angle is way over blown IMO.

Here is an idea, take the money you offered Tex and give it to Markakis and Roberts. And hey why not give some extra cash to Dunn too.

But Peace, why would we do soemthing like that when we can spend money on Hinske/Casey and a couple of awful pitchers.
