I'm not an acoustics expert but maybe you're onto something.   Speaking of the sound off the bat, I like Austin Hays but have you ever noticed that his shots never sound good?   I'm sorry if I'm being weird again!

Another 2 BBs tonight out of the lead off spot.  His OBP is .180 higher than his avg through 60+ PAs.  He’s quietly having an amazing start to his career.  25 BBs to 11Ks so far.  Impressive.

No, I have never noticed that.   

I went to a game in 2017 where I was sitting just a little right of home plate about 4-5 rows back.  The O’s hit 3 homers in the first inning and they were LOUD from that location.  My normal seats are 13 rows behind 1B and the sound isn’t nearly as loud at that distance.

Hays doesn't wear batting gloves.  I wonder if that has some effect.

Nah, I've never noticed that about Hays.  

I mean, I love the crack of the bat as much as anyone but I think that anecdote about Buck O'Neil saying that the sound of Bo Jackson's bat was always a load of crap.  Yeah, he said it while Jackson was taking BP in an empty stadium, of course it's going to sound different, it reverberates off 40,000 plastic seats.  Of course it's going to sound different when Frobby is 4 rows back instead of 13 and up the line.  

The idea that certain players have a different sounds off the bat is ludicrous.  Sure, someone might square one up better in one instance that sounds a bit louder, but at the end of the day it's a ball hitting a bat.  Maybe the only variable is the type of wood being used but that shouldn't make as much of a difference.  

I like being romantic about baseball as much as anyone else and I love Bo Jackson mythologies but it's a bit over the top at times, too.

You don’t think the force of the swing can influence the volume of sound produced? You don’t think a bunt, a swing that produces an 85 mph exit velocity, and a swing that produces a 110 mph exit velocity might result in different volumes of noise?

Certainly, but there are limits to how fast a human (yes, even Bo Jackson) can swing a bat.  I mean, I don't think Bo Jackson was swinging a bat harder than Giancarlo Stanton does.

Enough, I'm sorry for derailing the Jackson Holliday thread.

I think this is a great topic. We need to do an experiment. Or better yet con someone else into doing an experiment. Maybe tweet at all the swing doctors/training faculties and see if someone will try to test the idea. There are a lot of free decibel measuring apps for phones and they are tracking exit velocities in their training sessions. Just need some sound data and to correlate with exit velocity.
 

btw, in general I agree with you. I think it’s mainly baseball romanticism.

Aren't we still paying Chris Davis? Chris Davis vs. Adam Jones decibel derby to continue the 30th anniversary for Camden Yards. 

Jackson Holliday has a smooth swing, big leg kick though but I guess he's so athletic he can control it.

Matt said he's good friends with BRob, who lives in Sarasota, so he expected Jackson would be connecting up with him while down there.

      Well, I don't like to predict things on message boards but my prediction is we will not acquire two pitchers with a better Zips projection than Kremer. I would be more surprised by two than I would be by zero.

      You can’t ignore how he pitched against Detroit and the makeup of their roster. He has more value than even Suarez if that is who we end up playing.

      The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense. I prefer to play NY. Worse pen, doesn’t run as much.  Not a bunch of contact hitters.

      Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
