Steve Melewski as a play-by-play guy

I’ve heard two games lately with Steve Melewski doing radio play by play, and you know what?   He’s pretty darned good!   Not the mellifluous radio voice I’d prefer, and the Baltimore accent is a bit strong, but he’s quite good at quickly and accurately describing the action, and filling in facts and figures in between.   He’s certainly better than Newman or Garceau, and about on par with Arnold and Hollander, I’d say.  

One fact he cited last night that I didn’t know: the Red Sox are 18-39 (now 18-40) against the AL East, 49-32 against everybody else.  They’ve really laid down against Tampa (4-12) and Toronto (3-13).

I like Melewski too. I haven't heard him this year, but several years ago in Spring Training he did the audio play-by-play (with no color analyst) for the games that were streamed online on orioles.com. I have good memories of listening to him call those games.

I was traveling last night so I listened to the whole game instead of watched. He was much better than the other guy for sure.

Every time I didn't hear his voice for a while and then he would start talking I would immediately think "Why is Jason Stark calling O's games?" Sounds just like him.

During the 14 season losing streak, Steve was there for us on post game radio. Countless games driving home after another loss listening to Steve take calls, he made the drive home bearable, and entertaining. Jimmy from Silver Spring, Dave from Salisbury, Gueseppe from Rolland Park. They made that period very enjoyable as a fan. Thank you!

Dave from Salisbury, I haven't heard him for years since I stopped listening to 105.7 a couple years ago. He was so out there as a caller it left me wondering if it was a bit like Andy Kaufman.
