The NL MVP Race

It’s going to be an interesting MVP race in the NL this year.  The candidates, as I see them, are:

Nolan Arenado: 7.9 rWAR, 7.3 fWAR, .293/.358/.533, 154 OPS+, 30 HR, 103 RBI

Paul Goldschmidt: 7.8 rWAR, 7.1 fWAR, .317/.404/.578, 180 OPS+, 35 HR, 115 RBI.

Manny Machado: 6.8 rWAR, 7.4 fWAR, .298/.366/.531, 159 OPS+, 32 HR, 102 RBI.

Austin Riley, 6.5 rWAR, 5.5 fWAR. .273/.349/.528, 142 OPS+, 38 HR, 93 RBI

J.T. Realmuto, 6.5 rWAR, 6.5 fWAR, 276/.342/.478, 129 OPS+, 22 HR, 84 RBI

Mookie Betts, 6.4 rWAR, 6.6 fWAR, .259/.340/.533, 136 OPS+, 35 HR, 82 RBI.

Really , it comes down to the three at the top.   Arenado has the highest rWAR, Machado the highest fWAR, Goldschmidt the most gaudy offensive numbers.   It should be very close.   My gut instinct is that Goldy’s better offensive numbers will win out, but there’s a chance that Manny will win on the grounds that he had the weakest supporting cast, whereas Goldy and Arenado had each other.   I’m rooting for Manny but it will be hard to argue with either of the St. Louis players either.
