Rutschman named ROY finalist

Maybe this will further incentivize the O’s to sign Adley to an early contract extension. I think it’s doable and Adley would go for it to get guaranteed financial stability in the event of injury.

I don’t think it’s likely mostly because of ownership, but maybe they learned a lesson from not signing Manny to an early contract extension.

I'd counter that doing things like anticipating CBA changes is part of his job.

He would have had to be psychic.

Anyway, rather than dwelling on this issue, I’d rather dwell on the fact that Adley was good enough to finish second in the ROY voting despite missing the first quarter-season.  It’s really important.  I think back to Matt Wieters, who was a very solid player, multiple time all-star and Gold Glove winner, but never lived up to his hype.   Adley did live up to his hype, and clearly has room to get even better.   I’m really excited about what the next half-decade is going to bring, and hope the O’s find a way to keep him in Baltimore longer than that.

Do we know who the BAL BBWAA pair of voters for the AL Awards were?    I'd like to see the explanatory piece from the 2 out of 30 who left him out of the Top 3.

Had Kwan nipped him, I believe there would be a ton of philosophical takes this week on the propriety of baseball media holding drivers that affect many millions of dollars for the Clubs and Players they cover.

Or used to cover more actively, in case Peter Schmuck was one of the 30 AL media members deciding this kind of stuff.

Now let's see how many Orioles make those precious Top 100 prospect lists to gain their Scout Badge for 2023 carrots!

I'm just thankful Adley was being mentioned for ROY, let alone serious consideration. It wasn't too long ago that he wasn't even in the running. He started slow and hadn't played in many games, but the more games he played, the more attention he gained, and now his accomplishments speak for him. Well done Adley!

Can someone explain to me - aren't the new rules supposed to incentivize teams not leaving players down? It looks like to me we were penalized for having Adley up early enough to qualify for ROTY as he's now earned a full year of service time. Sure, we could have nabbed a draft pick if he won, but doesn't that incentivize teams to leave a guy in the minors unless they are SURE he will win ROTY?

Anyway, good for Adley and good for Elias for not being too anal about service time in this regard. None of it matters if we do the right thing and extend him ASAP.

IIRC the top 2 are supposed to get draft picks but the requirement is that they're up at the start of the season.  With Adley's injury and then going to the Minors for 20 days, he didn't qualify for the draft pick compensation but did qualify for the full year of service.

Gotcha, thanks.

Well I'm sure it won't matter to those who think Elias is egregious regarding service time manipulation (he's not), but those who are intellectually honest should register this and adjust their opinions accordingly.

FYI I don't think we would have gotten a pick unless he won ROY.  The 2nd and 3rd place finishes for ROY only get international draft picks, and since MLB and the players association didn't agree to that, the international picks are moot.  Now it's possible that with an extra month to play he would have accrued enough counting stats to keep up with Rodriguez, so we can't discount that.

I'm reading conflicting info on whether players are eligible for prospects after their rookie year, but it looks like they might be?  So it's possible that Rutschman will be eligible for draft pick compensation next year with a top-3 MVP finish.  But again, the rules are still somewhat vague on this.

    • I don’t think you have to ignore PEDs.  I think you have to look at it under the context of: 1. PEDs have been part of baseball since the inception and continue to be a part of the game.  They are part of the fabric of the game whether we like it or not. Read any book about baseball from the 20s-70s and PED use was rampant.  2. In his specific era, MLB looked the other way, almost encouraged the use, and almost all players were using PEDs (whether that be needle use or other products).  Even if they weren’t using a banned substance, they were using some type of PED.   3. Players who admitted to usage (or even were very strongly assumed to be users) have never even come close to what he was able to do in every facet of the game.  What he did showed the absolute pinnacle of baseball ability/achievement.  He was the most entertaining player to watch while he was at his peak. The fact that he dwarfed all other players, who were using, in every part of the game (defense, base running, contact ability, swing decision, power) showed his greatness.  He was almost 2x better than the league average player over his career and for a span of 4 years was 2.5X better than the league average player.  He was the greatest player ever and we will never see anything like it again.
    • I’m all for bringing Mayo up and putting Westburg at 2B whether Mateo is injured or not.   How much do you know about Mateo’s injury?
    • He has been outstanding, and, yes, whoda thunk it?
    • The ROY the year stuff is very debatable. I’d argue we are worse off losing a year of Gunnar Henderson than an extra pick. Now if Cowser won it, that would be different.
    • I know Mateo finished the game but there is absolutely no reason for him to tough it through that game injury. Just bring up Mayo and put Westy at second.
    • Why wouldn’t September days count? I think you were right the first time. https://www.mlb.com/glossary/rules/rookie-eligibility   In any case, I think it’s roster space much more than ROY eligibility holding Mayo in AAA right now. If he’d help them win more games right now he should be called up. If they get closer to a point where they can snag keeping him ROY eligible they may consider it - e.g., if they don’t make space at the trade deadline end of July, maybe they go a couple weeks with somebody else before calling up Mayo mid-August. I think it will naturally work out to have one of Holliday or Mayo be ROY eligible next year but not a priority for either of them. Holliday only had 2 weeks earlier, so I think he could be the callup when rosters expand September 1 and stay under 45 days (and that was perhaps deliberate in the timing of the decision to send him down). But I think, at a minimum, Mayo will be on the postseason roster to be DH vs LHP. We usually use Adley with McCann catching during the regular season, but obviously Adley will catch every game in the playoffs. So Mayo needs to get enough MLB reps to feel comfortable with him in that role at least.
