Of course. They obviously think there is a good enough chance of getting Mountcastle back that it's worth the risk of missing out on 10 days of McKenna. You may disagree but hard to fault them for that.

I just don't care for it as a strategy, especially when they don't really know how long the player will be out for.

Mountcastle is basically replacement level himself. He’s been worth 4.5 WAR for his career. I doubt 2 days of him at less than 100% is better than McKenna. Actually, McKenna has been worth 1.3 WAR for his career with less than 1/3 of the PAs of Mountcastle.

Fair enough. I also don't really care about missing out on McKenna enough to second guess the organization.

Mounty couldn't come in for that last out at 1B, he might not be all that close to being ready to play... Hicks probably be out again could be a lot of roster moves tomorrow with a couple IL's and a reliever optioned. McKenna is definitely on his way back.

They should have just put Mountcastle on the 10-day IL as soon as he got injured. I'm not sure why they have been hesitant on multiple occasions this year to put players on the IL.

Agreed, and despite what they said earlier today, I'd be pretty surprised if Hicks is available tonight.

Despite his mini-slumps and DP's at times, I have to say that Hays is an unsung hero this year in my book, not only with his timely key catches (running and diving) and throws to get runners, but did anyone notice two nights ago, he switched to right field when Kjerstad came into the game?  Kjerstad played right mostly in Norfolk, and left field isn't easy to play in Houston because of all of the crazy angles out there, but with the Astros having their lefty power coming up in the 9th inning, Hays took right field because of his talent and experience.  Abreu even smoked one to right that Hays made look easy.  That, my friends, is a team player.

They just (finally) put Mountcastle on the IL. McKenna has been recalled.

Considering Flaherty was scheduled to hit if the game went to extras on Monday, I’d say it’s best to have McKenna than an outside shot that someone might be available a day early.

About as good of a lineup they can put out for an afternoon game with Mountcastle out.

 

No Alvarez for the Astros.
