I thought that was Basallo's position?  I'm looking forward to 5 years of Holliday, Henderson, Mayo, Kjerstad, Basallo, Rutschman as the first 6 in the order.   That would be fun.

That’s only happening if Adley gets a contract extension, since he’s only under control for 4 more years.

That's more of a 2025 problem, at the soonest. And someone has to DH. I think the window with all of those guys is more like 3 years, unless some extensions happen.

With all due respect to Westy, who I really like as a player, he’s already a few months away from being 25. Mayo is tracking to be a much better and more valuable prospect than Westburg ever was given what he showed in his age 21 season. I realize Westburg may have pretty good defensive value as some sort of super utility type, but it’s pretty clear the Orioles don’t trust him at the dish against RHP.

I’m in the camp that believes Westburg is on Elias’ trade commodity list.  It would not be surprising to see him moved sometime between end of this season and next trade deadline.

Basallo obviously can’t play 3rd, and we’re presuming he’d split time between C and 1B, so this also helps with the thinking of trying to keep Mayo at 3rd long term. I don’t think Mounty is on the team any longer by the time Basallo is ready, so this would free up ABs for Basallo + who over else we run out there at 1st in ‘25.

So, here’s to hoping Mayo continues to improve his footwork and overall defense at 3rd and he puts all this talk to bed.

BTW he made a really nice play recently (playoff game I think?), charging in from 3rd on a softly hit ball and throwing to 1st for the out. It was definitely a MLB caliber play. He made it look easy, showing off that laser rocket arm too.

Unless they decide to move Holliday off of short, then there's no opening at 3b. The only way Mayo gets a shot at 3b is if Gunnar stays at short, Holliday shifts to 2b, and Westburg loses his job. Possible, but I think it's a lot more likely that Mayo ends up usurping Mountcastle.

I’m not sure I see a scenario where Holliday moves Gunnar off of short other than him being much more superior with the glove, which seems doubtful. As much as everyone (including me) loves Jackson, Gunnar is the alpha male at this point. And you don’t move the alpha male off of his position for any other reason than someone else is better there.

It's not like Gunnar hasn't logged plenty of time at third this year. I'm confident that Elias and Hyde will do what's best for the team when it comes to positional alignments, and that Gunnar will play where he's needed without making it a problem.

Elias said Ortiz would soon be playing short for someone in the majors. I still think it's the Orioles. Everyone seems to forget him. We have several good shortstops. I think Gunnar is, by far, the best option at third.

People keep saying this quote as if it means anything.

GM speak is just that…talk. Its talk without meaning.

I'm sure some of it is that, but I don't think everything said is meaningless or a lie. So, you don't think Ortiz will be playing short for a major league team next year?

I think the part that people are grasping onto that means nothing is the part about him being a SS for the Os.

Im not saying it can’t happen, I’m just saying that Elias saying it means nothing. I wouldn’t expect him to say anything different for various reasons.

It may depend on if he brought Ortiz up or there was a specific question. I don't think he had to go as far as to say he would be a starting shortstop in the majors.

    • Now overall I notice 29 K's in 17 innings. That ratio of 1.7 is top of the line for a starter!
    • Urias looks pretty cooked too though, and he's not providing the kind of defensive flexibility that Mateo is, and he doesn't have very good splits for platooning.  At least for 2023 and 2024 Mateo has had good platoon splits.
    • SSS but Holliday was playing incredible defense after like the first game or two when he seemed to have some jitters.  He had +3 OAA in a very short span.  Mateo has looked a little awkward at 2nd to be honest, and he's not the best at making the double play turn.
    • Hoping for a speedy recovery. That all happened fast. Not my initial impression reading the write up.
    • McCann looks cooked but he's in his last year and our options at backup C aren't great unless we're willing to trade for one.  But I'm not giving up a lot for a backup C.   I'd like to find a replacement for Urias.  He didn't look great last year and he's being thrust into a role that he's not really cut out for right now.  I don't think he's getting the 2022 magic back.  Maybe Westburg can go to 3rd full time and one of our 5 AAA 2nd basemen can work in with Mateo at 2nd.
    • I quoted myself, because I wanted to share something with you all.  I have memory issues.  Nothing full blown or anything, but I don't recall things nearly as well as I once did.  I mention this because it occurred to me that I posted a very similar thing about McCann last year, and he performed notably better in the 2nd half.  At least I believe so.   It's not that I feel I'm exactly wrong about McCann, but rather that he showed himself to be better just last season and could do so again.  I hope so. Memory issues are nothing to be ashamed of, though I'd be pretending if it didn't bother me.  I've been dealing with this for maybe five years or so, though it gets worse every year.  At 59, that's younger than most that have such issues.   I'm sure in a forum as populated as this one, there could be others going through what I am.  It is what it is... it's life, and I hope you're all doing your best with it.
    • Estrada and Tejada both continued their recent surges today.  Estrada was 2 for 4 with a double, while Tejada was 3 for 3  with a homer.  Tejada has his OPS up to .737, not bad for a league where .654 is average.  Estrada is at .628 and climbing.
