Been an O's fan since sitting in the bleachers at Memorial Stadium as a pre-teen in the 70s. Thought I'd make my first post about just placing $75 on Cano to win the AL Cy Young 😛 (pays $15,000).

Yennier Canó deserves his own season thread after his clutch outing tonight. Hyde has no reliable setup arms in the bullpen and he turns to the new guy Canó in the seventh inning clinging to a one run

Difference being that Koji was known for his command. This guy went from being a disaster in that area to this. It’s pretty incredible!

More fun with Cano’s stats:

In 2016, when Zack Britton had the best year for a reliever ever, his final WHIP was 0.84. We all remember how dominant he was that year. Game was simply over after the 8th inning. Cano has a WHIP of 0.185.

Sure, but let me know what it is when the year is over.  If it’s still 0.185, I expect we will have won the World Series.

Cano is on pace for a 7 WAR season as a relief pitcher. I expect that pace will come down, but as a comparison Zack Britton put a 4.1 WAR season in 2016. Even if Cano was expected to be a good relief pitcher his season would be amazing, but he's doing it as pitcher who struggled in his stint with the Twins and he was really wild.

Here we all were thinking Gunnar might earn us a pick with a ROY run. And Yennier might be running away with the ROY instead. (But wasn't a Top 100 prospect = no pick.)

By whom? The trade was certainly well received around here by most people since it included a nice starting pitching prospect in Povich and the emergence of Bautista as a Lopez replacement. Maybe the twitter knuckleheads didn't like the trade, but not sure why he's so convinced the hometown disliked the trade that acquired Cano.

Now I fully agree that Cano was a throw in.

That was the one thing in the article that I thought was a little odd too.  I thought even the general consensus among baseball people was it was a good trade for both.

There were plenty of posts on this site against the trade. Hell there have been posts in the past couple weeks saying the trade was unnecessary, we could have gotten Cano without giving up Lopez, we didn’t make the playoffs because we traded Lopez.  And plenty of people here and elsewhere saw it as Elias punting our playoff run last year.  It’s hardly a hot take to say it wasn’t well received.

Some of us saw Cano as a little more than a throw in.

The trade was panned nationally. A segment of people on this site aren’t really known in a case like this.

I’d take it a step further and say that any team trading away it’s good players while in contention is going to get panned by the casual fan base and most main stream media regardless of the return. The same fans that expect their team to sign every good FA to a 200 mil extension without considering the long term implications.

Way more of those out there than hangouters and other hardcores.

      I may be misunderstanding, but if you are suggesting that you would recall Rogers for the playoffs, then I must respectfully and strongly disagree. Baker is odd man out here, or maybe Smith, but I would definitely keep Bowman

      A litmus test is if you'd prefer Trevor Rogers back for last guy. Tell me if it sounds crazy, but a pitcher you can sign to a minor league deal in mid-August might not be competitive with the world's greatest hitters in late September. It is fun to curate a trick pitch that works for a minute.

      Just read two interesting tidbits - Juan Soto has battered him something like 18/35 which seemed like a lot but I guess PHI and WSN saw each other a bunch in the NL East. Also that he passed 1000 career innings.   It caught me a little by surprise he has been around that long.    Fingers crossed Bradish and Grayson in their careers can get there.    Eflin is 3rd among pitchers at age 30 and down this season. Hopping to Active Leaders to see how few pitchers attain that in this Driveline/Arm Barn era, tonight he became the 57th active pitcher to get there.     He gives us the ~162 IP we hope for in 2025, it'd go up about 20 spots.

      Westburg, Urias, Mountcastle… Good defense, even when there’s bad defense. Westburg missed a ball that went for a hit, but I didn’t feel any foreboding, no,”here we go again” because I felt sure that that one play wouldn’t ruin the game. And it didn’t. Good pitching, even when there’s bad pitching. Eflin had never in his whole career walked 5 guys, but I wasn’t worried, for some reason. Even when Bowman had his worst outing as an oriole, I wasn’t worried, no,”here we go again” because I felt sure we’d win. And we did. Good hitting, good base running, even when Santander REALLY wanted that triple… and didn’t get it.  The fundamental baseball smarts seem to have returned, so a mistake is just a mistake. I feel really good about this team now, even though they haven’t been perfect. I really feel they’ll cover for each other, and we will enter the playoffs strong. I feel most comfortable about facing the Yankees again; they just don’t seem like a strong team, and I’m not the least bit worried about facing them again.

      That is strong language coming from you.  The only recent guy I really couldn’t stand was Jimenez, though I sure wasn’t keen on Kimbrel for most of the season either.

      To state the obvious, the magic number for home field in the WC series is now 1, with 4 games remaining.   Would love to v close that out tomorrow va. the Yankees and then relax all weekend.
