Again, it's not exactly the same thing, but MLB speaks out of both sides of their mouth. And I dont care if Rose ever gets in the HOF. He broke baseballs cardinal sin.

On one hand, baseball frowns on against gambling as a threat to the sport, and on the other they gladly take the money from gambling sites as sponsors of their telecasts and the league.

I couldn't agree more.  I don't gamble much.  I'm not very good at it.  But the Pete Rose saga has always seemed more of a vendetta against him because he remains unapologetic about it than actually against gambling itself.  It's simply laughable now that MLB benefits from the advertising dollars from gambling sites that Rose remains excommunicated.  I do think he belongs in the HOF, tho.

If I were Draft Kings I'd be on the phone to Pete's agent.  "Now hear me out... here's the commercial.  'I'm Pete Rose and I don't always bet on baseball, but when I do I use DraftKings.com.'"

I actually agree here, and I'm someone who plays around with many bets every day. Not a lot of money though (usually 4 or 5 $10-$20 bets a day). My fear is all the young lives likely to be ruined, who have absolutely no idea how easy it is to become addicted. Now that it's on your phone, it's only worse. I was at the forefront of the poker boom in the mid 2000's, while in college. Same sort of thing. I didn't blow a ton of money but definitely sunk a lot of time in it.

As for the topic, this is one of those things where this is where the world has taken us and it definitely isn't going away. No use wasting energy on worrying about it.

As a general rule, I would never consider taking, after due consideration, a moral or ethical stance to be a waste of energy.

I don't really have a problem with gambling being legalized.  But I would have a problem with slot machines in my local supermarket as opposed to being in the casino where they belong.  Same with sports betting.

My local supermarkets have scratch off ticket machines.  Is that really all that different?  Is it just the noise and bright lights that bother you?

That and the fat old people sitting around all day.  You want that at your supermarket?  Let them buy their scratch off tickets and get the hell home.  But seriously, at the least the lottery benefits the state when the public won't vote for their own taxes to be raised to repair the roads and infrastructure in their suburbs that the current tax base will never cost the of.

You think it's a high class clientele at the scratch off machine?

I guarantee you the State would get a cut of the slot machine revenue.

I think it's amusing where people draw the line.  To me the two are more similar than not.

I'm sure many people of all kinds of class play the scratch off machine.  I don't know what one looks like because I've never played one.  And even if the state did get a cut of slot machines in supermarkets why would they care when people are getting their fix playing other kinds of lottery games?  If the state did a study and realized it could make far more money from people playing slots than from scratch off -- then fine -- but why would they be in supermarkets?  Why aren't arcade games in supermarkets (generally speaking)?  Maybe because arcade gamers tend to go to arcades -- where those games tend to belong.  The point of the original analogy is that sports betting belongs where it belongs -- in the casino (maybe online) and not at the ball game.  Why?  Perhaps because it annoys most people the way the smell of cigarettes (or marijuana) annoys most people.  Additionally, I just can't see the presence of gambling at the ballpark or on mlb tv ads making baseball any more popular than it has made betting at the horse track or the dog track or jai alai courts.  In fact I'd say the increase in betting on sports is an ominous sign for sport.

I'm not anti-gambling. Even though, I'm not a big gambler myself, I don't have an issue with sports betting. I just have an issue with being inundated wit the advertisements to BET during telecasts. Since I believe in personal responsibility, I don't think I should tell someone what they can and can't do with their money nor should I tell someone how they should enjoy the game.
