I believe the ball is immediately dead.   So if it had caromed off somewhere, Cedric would not have been allowed to go to 2nd even if he could have made it before someone from Boston got to the ball

On that play, the ump is basically part of the field and there is no umpire’s interference

I am not sure but my understanding is that you play on as if the Ump was part of the field.   I dont think there is any dead call
