Let’s assume Mateo is an .800+ OPS, 5+ WAR shortstop — now what?

No evidence to this opinion--just vibes--but he strikes me as someone who is going to suck until one day he doesn't. And hopefully he's on the Orioles then.

I agree.

Unless he breaks first.

I just don't like the idea of anointing one coach as being something special.

It seems to me that every coach has some success stories and some guys they can't help.

Sure..depending on how much you buy into him being that for several years, which I don’t.

Plus, we have arguably the best prospect in the sport, who is a SS that they took #1, ready within a year.

Agree with both points, but we are assuming he is that guy in this scenario. Having one in hand, it’s hard to part with that type of rare SS. Holliday should be great, but still so far to go. Nothing is automatically going to work out just as it should. He’s as sure a thing mentally as there is, but what if he fills out like dad? A lot can happen in two years. Aberdeen has humbled many, but he should be fine.

Good problems to have. As I said before, they just have to be decisive and deliberate in their processes. The changes Mateo has made just might be sustainable. The league is adjusting, and it will be interesting to see where he is at the end of 2023. He still gets pull happy for me too often, but the light seems switched on every time I see him not swing at the slider down and away.

Yes, Holt is a great pitching coach.  Imagine what he could do if he has some prime talent - Bobby Miller, Gavin Stone, guys like that who've been batted around on here as logical targets in a Mateo trade.  That is unless your argument is that Holt is so good that he can succeed even without high-end pitching talent to work with.  Then I think you will find yourself in an even lonelier place - one where even Leo Mazzone won't talk to you.

O's might already have high end pitching talent.

You can commit many sins on a message board.  Only one is unforgivable and that is to invoke the phrase "time will tell" or some variation thereof.  The debate is here and now.

I strongly disagree.  I think a sign of a civil conversation is the ability to say, "Well, I guess time will tell."  It's something akin to agree to disagree.

To again quote Norm MacDonald, "Somethings can only be resolved in the fullness of time."

I think you're wrong.  I guess time will tell.

Have you seen Norm's take on Germany? 🤣

See. Civil.

To me, the value of this or any message board is the dialogue and that means that anyone who makes an assertion is obligated to support it.  If you say "time will tell" as a way of saying there's no common ground and I no longer want to engage, that's one thing.  It's an entirely different thing if you want to take unconventional positions and act as if you're the only one with a crystal ball.

I understand what you're saying, but you can't expect to change everybody's mind, even with logic, even when you're right.  That's the beauty of disengagement.

And again, many, many things can only be determined by the future.

I am a bit curious, though, your original statement didn't directly quote anyone.  What did you object to?

    • This.  Baseball is a game of failure, but my goodness these guys went above and beyond in that department. Productive outs shouldn't be that hard.  Watch Witt in the first inning of Game 2.  And while the two playoff games perfectly told the story of the 2024 Orioles offense, I am hopeful that national stage embarrassment provides a real learning experience and motivation for fixing what is wrong with them.  As much as I am sure it hurts to watch your own hand being broken, Cowser should be watching that AB every single day from now until next October. Same thing with Adley channeling his inner Chris Davis and staring at that 2-0 meatball like he has never seen a major league pitch before.
    • Could fit the profile Elias likes of veteran free agents who might be willing to sign for few years at higher AAV's. I love the splitter. I'd be interested. Free agent means no posting fee, correct? Not that it matters.
    • All the talk about facing LH pitchers and needing RH bats to match up - I think it’s a bit overblown. Our approach was terrible and our guys failed to play team baseball just as much against RHP w/ platoon advantage. Guys just consistently failed to do their job.
    • I agree on both parts here. I’ve been reflecting on my love for baseball. Even the postseason helped me realize I enjoy the slow burn of the regular season.  I also am far away from MD and for me Baltimore is part of my cultural roots (both parents from the area). So in some sort of way, like you said, maybe there’s a healthy separation and more tolerance for failure. Maybe even nostalgia, lol. But I’ll take it.
    • I don’t live in Maryland either, but I still have family that are there and most of them are more into the Ravens, yet they send me O’s stuff all the time — which really isn’t a great pulse for O’s fan expectations. I think from the time I lived there until now (which is a few decades), Baltimore is definitely more of a football town. Maybe my family does reflect the times? As for OH and representation, that’s a fascinating question. To me, the OH feels like the place is generally a group of the hardcore of the hardcore baseball fans, with some part timers mixed in. The differences tend to break on personality types (cynics, optimists, realists — and a handful of comedians). If Elias only tweaks a couple things and doesn’t make any fundamental changes (like maybe drafting more pitchers) or pretending nothing can be done about RISP — then any glow about the rebuild will truly fade, at least in my house.
    • The lack of velocity will be issue I think in majors at his age but the secondary pitches must be very good.  It is interesting that in Japan the splitter is like the cutter/sweeper is in MLB.  It seems Asian league goes more for the up and down movement while MLB pitching strategy is the lateral movement of pitches.
