What about Mayo?

I’m not sure where you are getting this from when Elias’s only comment was that Mateo will get more reps at CF this spring. That does not mean he will be the backup CF.

I would bet Cowser gets double the starts at CF than Mateo. Hays might get more starts than Mateo there too, and he only started 5 games there last season.

I think we’d be hearing about how well he’s doing in CF if it was even remotely true. I don’t see Mateo getting many CF innings this year.

The reality is that this team should be able to have many of the young players on it and rotate a lot of guys around so that several guys are getting 400ish at bats but very few get into the 600 range.

I don't disagree at all.  Who do you want getting 600 at bats?

Gunnar. I don’t think anyone else that definitely makes the team should be in position to play 155+.  If Mullins is healthy and hitting lefties reasonably well, he perhaps enters this discussion. He would be the next guy for me.

And to be clear, someone(s) may establish themselves as a guy to get 600+ at bats. This is more of an entering the season plan but one that can be altered. Just depends on the development of the young players And/or the health/performance of the vets.

Note: Mayo and especially Holliday may be guys I would put down for that too but I’m skeptical if they will or even should make the OD roster, especially Holliday.

That's about right and we agree on all points.  Gunnar was the only guy I'd think of who should get 600+ at bats without question.

I think Adley should.  He had 687 last year.  Fine with me to get him a bit more rest, but not 87 at bats’ worth.

I suspect that next year will be year where we truly only have a vet bench guy at backup C. Urias, Mateo, and O’Hearn, are good depth to help win over 162 this year. Or at least the first half of the season. In a perfect world, Elias could flip all three for the best prospect deals he could find and then use their 2024 salaries to sign one of Clevinger/Lorenzen.

As for Mayo specifically, I’d love to see him get ABs this year at 3B/DH/COF. I think he has a path to playing time even with Westburg. Urias probably would have to go.

The solution to our pitching injuries could be to just ride with Holliday/Mayo and score more runs.

Looking forward to see how they handle Norby. Wonder if he gets any starts in the OF

Gotta figure he does. He has a potential to be a right platoon bat for us. Just gotta figure out where he can be serviceable in the field.

There is enough hit tool there that 300-400 at bats is probably worth it for him if his defense doesn’t kill you.
