Hypothetical Tanner Scott trade scenarios

Miami still makes some sense to trade with and they have a piece that would make a lot of sense for us in old buddy Tanner Scott.

Scott is, of course, good now after years of frustrating starts and stops as an Oriole. He's like DL Hall in almost every way except that there were no allusions of Scott being a SP. It would be pretty funny to trade for him back, but past history aside he fills the DL Hall hole perfectly.

He was worth 3.6 (!) rWAR last year. 2.31 ERA, 0.987 WHIP (!), threw 78 (!) innings and had 12 K/9. Sheesh. That's a horse right there.

We have a lot of things Miami could use, like infielders and outfielders. But it's tough to figure out what Scott is worth exactly, for one year.

Personally, I think Norby straight up is more than fair considering the years of control. Maybe Norby plus a pitcher from last year's draft. Miami probably prefers a SS, but Mateo is hardly enticing I'm sure. Unless they really like Stowers and you could do a Stowers + Mateo + low-A pitcher, but it seems unlikely. Thoughts?

Can we just send back Jud Fabian, Guerrero and Velez tell them they can keep Sulser and lets just pretend that mis understand a couple years ago never happened?

Well we released Velez, so they can definitely have him!

I could see Vespi as a nice piece. Stowers, Vespi, and Mateo. You get a lefty power bat, lefty bullpen arm with years of control, and a SS which they need pretty badly. All guys you can plug in at the ML level. Not bad for 1 year of a guy who wasn't even their closer.

I get the impression that Urias is more likely to be traded than Mateo at this point.  Sounds like Mateo could be backing up Mullins in CF and be a super utility guy with speed off the bench.  If Urias has value he could be traded and maybe open up an opportunity for Norby to make the roster.

Tanner Scott will become available once MIA falls out of contention.  Until then, point is somewhat moot.  At which point MIA may have better leverage since back end RPs could be in short supply bc who else out there, really?  Lesser tier candidates like Chapman, Finnegan, Harvey. Maybe Jensen if RedSox implode early, but he is somewhat expensive and another year on contract. PITT loves Bednar too much.  Expanded playoffs keep others with shots at postseason. Doormats like COL, LAA, OAK don’t have anything really viable IMO.  Instead Another FLA name to consider might be AJ Puk.

Puk is interesting. Looks like he had some home run issues last year (1.6 per 9, up from 0.9 the year before), which our park could probably help with. WHIP is low-ish and K's are high.

MIA needs offense at 1B and DH so O'Hearn could work, their OF has some guys for CF and 1 COF, nobody that hit very well last season but fairly young so Stowers makes some sense, and they have a rookie at SS who might benefit from Urias as a backup middle IF capable of playing all 3 positions. Probably too much for Scott so include Trevor Rogers and add Seth Johnson.

I would sign up for Stowers and Urias for Scott all day. Freeing Stowers would feel great, and Urias is redundant with Westburg.

Peter Bendix accepts the Chris Getz/Dylan Cease injury risk if he doesn't do it in spring.

I think Scott probably just had his Career Year and the blend of Quality/Quantity his GM has to sell will never be higher.

Its some the optics of New GM Move #1 for Miami's (minimal) fan base.    A Marlins beat person on a 2024 preview podcast the other day had the observation coming off the playoff appearance they have had zero major league signings thus far this offseason, despite Sandy Alcantara's 184 innings given the 84-78 team going to zeroes for 2024.

I may be in the minority but I think Urias is worth more than a reliever with 1 year of control. 3 years of control, A GG on his resume. His offensive number seemed to be much better for some reason in 2022 but looking he’s only about 15 points off between those 2 years. And he can play multiple positions in the infield. Plus about 6 war over 2 seasons

It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come-a thread promoting a trade for Tanner Scott.

Years ago when he was yet to debut for the Orioles people here were already saying he was a bust because of his command. “Why are they holding onto this guy, he’ll never be a major leaguer.”

Uh huh.

Any trade for a reliever should include Baumann if possible. Since the trade would kick him off the 26 man for sure. He’s out of options. If we’re trading for a lefty then we should probably also include one of Perez, or Irvin, since could we really carry 4 lefties in the pen?

Would our spare parts be enough?  O’Hearn, Stowers, Baumann, and Perez?  Not just enough for Scott, but that is the pool + Norby to make a trade from right now for any reliever.
