Is that an accepted piece of contemporary wisdom, or just your opinion?

Bill James advocated bating your best hitter second, IIRC, rejecting the many-decades-old wisdom that you bat your best hitter third -- unless he's a home run hitter and you have a guy who's almost as good to hit third, right ahead of him, or unless he's an on-base, low-power leadoff guy. It made since to me, and still does, to hit your best on-base guy (who will take some pitches) first and your best hitter second. That balances giving your best hitter more ABs and having him come up with a runner (or more) on so he can drive in more runs.

Well, he came into the game with a 2.68 ERA and 1.006 WHIP, both better than his career averages.

I'm perfectly fine with him just sta ying this good all year.
