Talk about backing into the playoffs. I have a feeling we will “clinch” a spot based on someone else losing

It could even happen on our off day tomorrow, depending on how things go with the O's and Mariners games today. Mariners are playing in Houston tomorrow night.

Looks like AL East and AL West have same deal with 7 to play - 5 game leads and the chaser has three at the first place team.

Royals now having lost 6 in a row - the 5/6/7 is fuzzy.

Tuesday night will only be some fun if the O's pick up a game today - 1 back with a sweep going to the final weekend an opportunity, 2 back with a sweep going to the final weekend a mirage.     The Orioles have played the showdown generally into Grapefruit League mode, but at least yesterday was not a playoff game.

NYY in great shape for 1 seed, won regular season series 4-2 over CLE, so effectively 3 up in the loss column.    CLE one of the few clubs with two off days in the final week, and a likely bye to rest that hard worked cadre of relievers.    That said, the Astros do play the Guardians the final weekend, and could be within striking distance of that valuable seeding into the ALDS round.

Detroit is the one team I really don't want to face in the WC round.

Unfortunately, I think there's a very good chance we face Detroit in the WC round, given how well they are playing, their soft schedule the rest of the way and the recent poor play of KC and MIN.

They won't get the benefit of facing our weaker starters like Suarez and Povich, but on the other hand we'll face to face Skubal.

Yea it sucks to see us lose 4 of 6 against Det and never face Skubal.  To be fair, while they made plays, the Os also had a lot of bad luck and bad breaks. It happens.

With SEA losing, the O's can clinch tomorrow on their off day.

Update: maybe I'm wrong about that. Roch and other beat reporters are saying the O's can't clinch until Tuesday.

No the Mariners don’t really have anything to do with us clinching because we lost 2/3 vs the Tigers.  Our matching number is still 2.

There is still a big chance they won’t make it. Does anyone see this team winning more than 1 or 2 games?

It's not a big chance. If they win even one more game, missing the playoffs would require all three of MIN/KC/DET going at least 5-1 in their final six.

Their odds to hold onto the 4 seed are also pretty good, though not as secure as it should have been.

It’s not a big chance.  But for the first time in a long time, the Tigers/Royals/Twins all have over a 60% chance of making the playoffs. The O’s are at 99.9% but stranger things have happened.

Yes, between Bobby Witt's team and Gunnar Henderson's team, one of them actually is flirting with missing the playoffs.

    • We are doing our best to try and blow it
    • There was a game August 7th when he made questionable ph decisions. At that time, I believe pinch hitters were batting .370 with an OBP of .429 Now it’s .325 and .389 Any idea what the numbers are since August 7th?
    • Prevent coverage causes you to prevent winning.
    • Let’s not blow this game guys. Soft coverages.
    • After tonight's game in Boston, the Twins have a 3-game series against the Marlins, so you're correct that they may not keep losing.
    • If you don’t think there’s a possibility of the Os missing the playoffs at this point I don’t know what to tell you.  Not saying it’s likely, and I’m sure not rooting for it (before some clown accuses me of that), but my eyes have to be open to that possibility. The team has played poorly over and over again right in front of us. The Tigers probably won’t lose more than 1 the rest of this week.  KC and the Twins have to start winning at some point - and we might have to beat the Twins ourselves, which how can you possibly be confident about that either? Those teams arent likely to just keep losing over and over.    We will probably be subjected to the Yanks celebrating their division title on Tuesday - if not then, certainly at some point this week, right in front of our guys. Perhaps that vision somehow lights a fire. I hope so.    Nice seeing Westie and Ramon back and glad they’ll get a full week before the playoffs start, if we do make it. There is some hope there at least. But things need to change on the field, and fast, or else all will have been for naught.
    • As both an Orioles fan and Albert Suarez roto owner, I am frustrated he was allowed to pitch to the top of the order a 3rd time in the 6th inning. At the end of the top of the 5th, with Batter 20 Carpenter on deck as he retired Batter 19 Meadows for the final out, I mentioned to the friend I was there with it felt wrong no one was throwing because if Meadows got to Carpenter, a barrel was going somewhere.     Big Al got Meadows to close the 5th, and then on what was essentially Fan Appreciation Jordan Westburg Ramon Urias Good Vibes day, Urias starts and Westburg finishes a rally to turn a 3-0 deficit into a tie game. And three nanoseconds after the rally, Big Al, my unofficial 14th best out of 14 Orioles arms today at run prevention on a per batter basis, is deployed to try the Kerry Carpenter Challenge again with perhaps the most predictable HR outcome I have ever seen in person. SIGBOT could not have done better if it was trying to yield runs in that 6th inning, which it did.    The team's tactical decisions today make it fairly clear it is Late Season Sarasota.      Guys are getting their work in, the regular season competitions are over.
