Patrick Reilly 2024 (Acquired for Billy Cook)

Vandy guy got $450k of Pirates pool money the Skenes year.

He has logged a big workload in the Sally, leading the league with 108 strikeouts.    Like Povich-McDermott, a SP sustaining a 30% K rate (and a bunch of walks).

With Baumeister, we were talking about if the A+ performance was strong enough to rate a taste of AA, and I guess Reilly is about on that border too.

My hopes are they let him finish the season in Aberdeen. Then tinker with some things they think will improve his location during the offseason. Instantly one of the strongest arms in the system.

Reilly: 88.0 IP, 61 H, 38 R, 33 ER, 41 BB, 108 K’s, 3.38 ERA, 1.159 WHIP, 11.0 K/9, 2.6 K/BB

Baumeister: 70.2 IP, 53 H, 31 R, 24 ER, 43 BB, 91 K’s, 3.06 ERA, 1.358 WHIP, 11.6 K/9, 2.1 K/BB.

Fangraphs ranked Reilly 22nd in the Pirates’ system with an overall 40 FV grade.   Here’s what they said:

“Reilly signed for $453,100 after the Pirates selected him in the fifth round of the 2023 draft out of Vanderbilt. He was an effective swingman and long reliever for the Commodores, but was moved to the minor league rotation in 2024 and is being developed as a starter. Reilly has a high-waisted, medium frame that is still on the lean side, so there’s some room for additional strength/weight in the coming years. Reilly works out the stretch, there’s substantial effort present in his delivery, and he throws from a very high slot, which contributes to the 20-plus inches of induced vertical break on his heater. His four-seamer sits 92-95 mph and has touched up to 97 mph so far in 2024, and it features plus riding life that has generated a 35% miss rate as of our data sourcing a couple weeks ago. It’s a power-over-precision operation with his fastball, which is an offering he doesn’t need to be overly precise with due to the effective life it features. He’ll throw sliders with downer action as well as some with more of a horizontal tilt. The cutter is a short, quick offering that Reilly especially likes to run in on the hands of left-handed hitters; it will be a very important pitch for him because the minimal action on his changeup makes it tough to project as a viable pitch for him.

“It makes sense to stretch Reilly out and see what happens, but if we’re predicting his outcomes, they likely fall in relief. He already has a reliever look with the amount of effort his delivery requires, and we think his fastball could jump a grade by maximizing velocity in short, one-inning bursts. Reilly projects as a middle-relief type with the capacity to handle a higher-leverage role if he can tame the walks. He’s someone who could move quickly once the bullpen transition eventually happens.”

They like Baumeister better (40+) but the performance has been similar.

Nice comp.  We traded two 10th rd picks for pitching.  Cook for Reilly.  Etzel for Eflin.  Good drafting.

Very nice trade. Cook was a redundant streaky bat with no real position so getting a legitmate arm for him is a great under the radar deal here. I'm looking forward to watching him throw.

  • Tony-OH changed the title to Patrick Reilly 2024 (Acquired for Billy Cook)

Yeah this was great. It makes it so that it's kind of like we never lost Baumeister.

Pirates must really need any RH bat who is close to the majors.

Elias called it a "challenge trade" which I thought was funny.

Seems like another guy in the Forret, and Fruit, mold. Nice pickup for Cook.

He reminds me a bit of trace bright and chase alsup. 4th/5th round pick, high k rate but walk issues. Reliever in college but being converted to starter in the minors.

2024 GB/FB for All Affiliated Minors qualified arms on Fangraphs, Reilly is 22nd of 334, comfortably in the Top/Bottom 10% depending on if you feel that is good or bad.

That particular sort educated me Justin Armbruester is #1 on the extreme of that attribute this season (often flyballs, rarely groundballs).

Fall from grace for Charles. Last year people were hyping him almost as the next Felix.

Yeah, he didn’t get it done.  Good luck to him catching on with someone else and figuring it out.

This description reminds me of the way Bradish was described when he was acquired in a trade. Specifically, "...he throws from a very high slot, which contributes to the 20-plus inches of induced vertical break on his heater. His four-seamer sits 92-95 mph..."

Here's whatMLB.com had to say about Bradish:

"Bradish’s unique delivery creates deception that allows his low-90s fastball to play up, though it can reach 95 mph at times. The 6-foot-4 right-hander pairs it with a power curveball in the low-80s he uses to miss bats, and he features a changeup and slider-like cutter as well. The slider, which Bradish throws in the high-80s, may develop into his best secondary pitch with time.

The combination of Bradish’s size, stuff and max-effort delivery give him a lot of moving parts on the mound; as a result, he’s struggled with command and control issues both in collegiate and pro ball. Those may ultimately land him in the bullpen, where his fastball-breaking ball combination may translate better in shorter stints."
