Gunner and Adley

Holliday won’t sign an extension, but I wouldn’t give him one until he shows his defense is worth it.

At this point, I'm comfortable locking at Holliday as a solid regular, Brian Roberts type but you get perennial All Star/MVP upside.  If there is an extension for about 10 years, $100 mill, I'm jumping on it.  When a player has proven he can perform at the ceiling he was projected at, there are no more discounts.  How much more would the Royals had to pay by waiting for Witt to show his bat is really good.

Gunnar absolutely should be signed to a 10 or 12 year contract. He's a franchise player and athlete.

I've never been in favor of an Adley extension because he'll be a 30-year old catcher in his first season of his new deal (assuming he plays this one out). It never makes sense to give big money to catchers past 30-years old.

Now depending on his performance and what the system has to offer by 2028, I might be open to a few years extension, but I don't see the Orioles needing to do anything be go to arbitration with Adley.

It’s their MO.   We never tend to hear about nagging injuries that guys are playing through until the year is over.

Let's hope you're right.  Adley is a big part of this team. Let's hope it's injury related and he comes back strong next year if not the rest of this year

As SG has been pointing out the bat is concerning. If the bat was more viable at least you can move him to DH or possibly 1B to salvage some value out of the deal sort of like the Twins did with Mauer. So as much as it pains me to say they may need to walk away from him on a long term deal and that stinks knowing with 20/20 hindsight the Orioles could of had Witt

I put more on the idea that he usually bats righty as a DH than anything else.

Thats the clear difference to me.

I do think that might be a James McCann byproduct.    If next year's backup catcher is a left handed hitter, it might go the other way.    The Orioles/Hyde chase the Left-Right advantage a lot.

What’s the rush on extensions?  If they are not taking hometown discounts, then playing out remaining pre-arb/arb years and then determining FA years may be best financial and business decision for Os.  Passage of time and years will inform whether Adley is just above average and whether Gunnar is Witt or a notch below.  Worst case on Adley is FA 2028 and Gunnar FA 2029.

Why is Witt any more proven than Gunnar? Just because his 2024 is better? Gunnar is still on pace for an elite season all time for any SS and he is 23 years old. Dont forget Gunnar was on pace for the highest WAR season ever by a SS into June. Witt has been on an unbelievable heater and has established himself for sure, but Gunnar is certainly in that conversation as 1a/1b for best young shortstop in the game. To that point, Gunnar has accumulated more career WAR than Witt and is a year younger, and has played less. Gunnar and Witt are both generational.
