Didn't we have Tony Butler in the Seattle trade before? Haha. Am I wrong? Is that who we traded for Craig Tatum?

I said Tony Butler-ESQUE...Just as he was basically the 5th player in the Bedard deal, a player like him being the 5th guy in this deal. Low minors player with some upside but far from an elite prospect.

I don't know to much about Boxberger what is his ceiling? We talked to death about Alonso and Cozart. I have always been a Wood fan. To you Sportsguy you thought we could get Alonso and Cozart with Guthrie so Hardy adds the other 3? Wood is mid rotation ceiling with back end bullpen stuff, Boxberger whatever he is and a upside B- C prospect.

I voted Yes based on stats but would like to know about Boxberger.

Boxberger is a reliever...Nice K and BB numbers this year.

I feel Guthrie and Hardy have close to equal value...2-3 of those guys for each of them, with Wood and Alonso being the headliners..In other words, either Wood or Alonso along with 1-2 of the other guys for either Guthrie or Hardy..So, this just puts it all together.

I'm interested to know why anyone wouldn't take this trade.

We get a young replacement level SS back in this trade. We get a 1b. We get a reliever. Travis Wood gives us good MLB depth back as well.

Lots of savings and lots of value. This deal could really help the O's in the FA market in being able to have some leverage and helps us with the MLB ready AAA type talent this team is really lacking right now.

I'd do it with hesitation. Guthrie is unlikely to be part of the team when we contend, so Alonso plus a Butler type would do it for that part of the trade.

Now I would like to extend Hardy, but only for prospects that would likely be better than the ones we would get if he walks. I think Cozart will be an MLB average middle IF with an OPS around .725-.750. Wood is as good (or better) of a prospect as someone like David Hernandez, with a good 2010. I think he would start right away on the Orioles, and he's younger than Guthrie with a similar upside in my opinion. I don't know much about Boxberger though, so could someone help (besides just stats, actual opinions)?

I don't think JJ Hardy is this good, or this durable. Plus, I think he walks for picks before we sign him for a fair market price. Good proposal, and fair. I think we might be asking for too much to include a Butler type though in addition.

For me, I wouldn't do it, but Cincy should. They could be looking at two players who would grant them four additional picks moving forward. If the Orioles are going to trade Guthrie alone, then I would say yes to Alonso and Boxberger. I am not that interested in dealing Hardy however.

Because you would be trading away your best pitcher and an elite shortstop for a young first baseman who hits with very little power and is average at best on the defensive side. You would be replacing an elite shortstop with a decent one and you may be getting another Kotchman type option at first.

If we a re dealing both players together then I want an elite prospect. If we do not get that, then I would prefer to hold out for picks or extend Hardy and deal Guthrie.

    • This is the right approach. the orioles should be spending more money and I believe they will, but I expect it to be measured with less risk (ie we won’t be handing out a Hader type deal or a  long term contract to Santander IMO) improving on some of the obvious weaknesses certainly makes sense.    1x SP: Burnes, Fried, Buehler 1x RH OF/DH: Martinez, O’Neill, Profar 1x 1B: (wishlist) Alonso, Walker
    • Interesting. I had forgotten that they signed him and then got him in the pitching lab in the offseason. Since September is prior to the end of the season, I would take "two year contract" to mean September '23 is Year 1, and then '24 is Year 2.  That is a cool article. Very encouraging how closely they are following the KBO.
    • I think most teams would want to have an MVP candidate at quarterback.   Most of the time this will mean that he is better than the guy they currently have.  That's why. My quote was not taking salary into account.  If you take his current salary into account I think you are still talking about a majority of the NFL teams that would take him right now.  If the salary is an issue you find a way to make it work.  I'm starting to come around to the idea that the salary cap is kinda fake in a way after I keep seeing teams do stuff like adding void years other trickery to get the guys they want.
    • Well I sort of disagree here. You said guys have been bad to questionable. I think that’s wrong. I just think a few guys have been awful and that has really hurt us. I would absolutely give Washington more time. Brade and Kane are well liked but doubtful they want to play them much right now. A trade should be considered if things don’t improve.
    • Yeah, I'd rather keep him over Soto.  I mean Soto can't start.  Yes Soto was dominant at times out of the bullpen but he was also gasoline on a fire out of the bullpen.  I would rather pay Suarez $4 or 5 million, knowing he can start or pitch in the bullpen than Soto, knowing he can only start and is liable to melt down when needed most.
    • It is funny how much Hays (the pre-2024 version anyway) matches the type of player they'll likely look for. I doubt that reunion happens though.
    • Weird thing about Suarez is that MASN had this being a 2 year deal when they talked about him back in April. ”The Orioles made another smart move with Suárez by signing him to a two-year contract in September. They knew what they’d ask from him and how it could contradict, and they didn’t want to give him any reasons to resist.” https://www.masnsports.com/blog/another-look-at-how-suarez-came-to-the-orioles
