I can't tell if your being a dick or not, but I'll entertain you with a response. I'm speaking in general terms about real life and baseball. We are all debating about our trades and the merit of signing a fat guy who might not pay off in years 5-8 of his contract. To the average Orioles fan things like this actually don't matter. To smart fans like me, they don't matter either because we lose in the short term (because we suck) and we lose in the long term (because its free agency).

The other option is rebuild. That worked out great with Andy. Let's endure another 5 years of losing and then restart with another GM. Keep in mind, while we do this, the rest of the AL East improves GREATLY.

I'm just a pissed off fan in general and pointing out that either option doesnt work. It just baffles me that people still dont understand if you sign a free agent you should expect to lose some in the middle/end. Sometimes even in the beginning.

There's a major difference between assuming some risk, and simply not caring that you are paying too much.

Frankly, I don't care what the "average Orioles fan" thinks. I care about what is best for the team. That's also the general manager's job to care about. If the best thing for the team is to start over because there isn't a chance of competing with this group, so be it. If the best thing for the team is to go all-in on certain free agents because the talent is in place and just needs to grow into better performance, so be it.

The "average Orioles fan", as you picture them, is only going to come back for a winning team anyway, so why chase the dragon that you cannot catch when you can go home, start over, and build a team that can do something good?

File to FWIW: talked with rep of Boras and Orioles are not "all talk" and do have some interest in Prince Fielder

https://twitter.com/#!/Olsen_Don/status/144637073071149056

Now saying this, I do not see the Orioles as major players for Prince.

No, I do not see it at the end of the day. All teams have interest in him. "@animefan89: @Olsen_Don Could the O's really sign fielder?"

Here's the latest on Boras from Fielder.

http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/135221993.html

It seems very well like the Orioles could be one of the clubs he's talking about

So the quote said he didn't meet with too many teams who are three years away from being good, yet you think that the O's are very well likely one of the clubs he was talking about? Pitbull!

Per MLBTR:

Boras made it clear that Prince Fielder has drawn lots of interest this offseason. The agent explained that Fielder compares favorably to all-time greats such as Jimmie Foxx and suggested teams will look to lock Fielder up for as long as possible if they recognize his potential as someone who can produce at the plate for the better part of a decade while boosting TV ratings and attendance

Does the above strike anyone else as really, really funny? I mean, of all the HOFers to compare Fielder to when searching for the longest contract possible.

Might as well just say "six years...that's what he's got left."

I doubt Don Olsen knows more than Roch or anybody else. The only people who know if the Orioles will sign Fielder are Peter Angelos, Dan Duquette and Buck Showalter.

And 99% of us on this board.

I want Fielder in a Orioles uniform as bad as anyone here. But it aint happening. If the Marlins have truly back away from Pujols they are going to back the truck into Boras's driveway for Fielder.

The Mariners have no chance either so forget all the trade talk for Smoak.

The new Marlins stadium has really large dimensions though. Not to mention Fielder can't DH there.

Also Marlins will not give a no-trade clause to anybody.

And then there's this tweet from Haudricourt:

New Marlins stadium RF line - 335' to HP

Rogers Centre RF line - 328' to HP

Nationals Park RF line - 335' to HP

Wrigley Field RF line - 353' to HP

Safeco Field RF line - 326' to HP

Oriole Park at Camden Yards RF line - 318' to HP

Why did you list only the RF line? Why not RF and the RF/CF alley? and even CF?

Do you pick and choose the statistical data that you use to support your theory much?

One of the more ludicrous assertions I've heard here. Especially since the distance down the RF line is just one factor into how good or bad a home run park is, and often not the most important.

It is the factor that fits the argument he wants to make. Therefore, it is absolutely the most important. JTrea logic 101 Drungo, you really should know this by now. :)

    • Well I sort of disagree here. You said guys have been bad to questionable. I think that’s wrong. I just think a few guys have been awful and that has really hurt us. I would absolutely give Washington more time. Brade and Kane are well liked but doubtful they want to play them much right now. A trade should be considered if things don’t improve.
    • Yeah, I'd rather keep him over Soto.  I mean Soto can't start.  Yes Soto was dominant at times out of the bullpen but he was also gasoline on a fire out of the bullpen.  I would rather pay Suarez $4 or 5 million, knowing he can start or pitch in the bullpen than Soto, knowing he can only start and is liable to melt down when needed most.
    • It is funny how much Hays (the pre-2024 version anyway) matches the type of player they'll likely look for. I doubt that reunion happens though.
    • Weird thing about Suarez is that MASN had this being a 2 year deal when they talked about him back in April. ”The Orioles made another smart move with Suárez by signing him to a two-year contract in September. They knew what they’d ask from him and how it could contradict, and they didn’t want to give him any reasons to resist.” https://www.masnsports.com/blog/another-look-at-how-suarez-came-to-the-orioles
    • Dam the mosquito is in my Jelly. Please go away
    • Elias is refusing to spend money that Rubenstein has made available.  Do you have any sources?
    • Outside Hamilton, I can't really think of any areas or invidivuals outside the line that have really stepped up.  Humphrey and Stephens have played okay but it certainly hasn't offset the complete zeroes that Eddie Jackson and Marcus Williams have been.  I don't think you want to pull Hamilton off SS even though he can handle deep zone assignments fine, because he's essentially a linebacker that can cover wide receivers and there's too much value in that in the box.  And I think that Roquan/Simpson look lost in pass coverage because the safeties behind them are playing like butt.  Besides Roquan wasn't ever really a great coverage safety, he was kind of okay at it but he was never like a Lavonte David or Fred Warner there.   I'm starting to wonder if we need to either trade for a FS and/or start giving Ardarius Washington more snaps.  He certainly doesn't look worse than Jackson/Williams at this point in his limited playing time.  In general i think safety is an undervalued position so we're likely to get good value in trade.
