Brian Roberts: I am concerned

I have had 5 concussions in my lifetime. One from a terrible car wreck, one from a baseball under my right eye, and three while playing football. 3 were termed mild, two were called severe. I count myself very fortunate to have never had any post concussion systems. But thats just it, its pure good fortune to have never had any lingering effects to these concussions.

Anyone spewing hate and discontent towards Brian Roberts, or anyone else suffering from this tragic injury, is just wrong. Roberts would love to play, and he will if he can. I won't speculate as to the odds of him playing again or not, because its all just a guess. For Brian, I just hope and pray that he fully recovers. Not so much so that he can play baseball, but so that he can live a great life going forward.

Both of my aging parents suffer from dementia, but not from being concussed. I can tell you that the Medical community has a very low level of understanding about issues involving the brain. It is terribly frustrating to not have the answers, but the truth is that at this time, there are no answers.

Has the concussion stopped Roberts from his weightlifting program? Is it an optical illusion or does Brian look as scrawny as he did when he was a rookie. Just saw some spring training photos in the Sun projecting the 25 man roster and saw a picture of Roberts. Maybe it's just me, but he really looks smaller (no joke) than I remember.

I think the concussion stopped most parts of Roberts' life for a healthy chunk of time. It has definitely impacted the rest of his fitness.

So? He says he" wacked" himself. That could mean any number of things, from a mob hit, to a dog getting a newspaper on his butt while being house trained. The point I'm making is the average ML ballplayer generates a bat speed of about 76 mph. The helmet is designed to absorb the impact of a 90 mph ML FB. You simply cannot generate anything near that kind of force while holding the bat in front of you with both hands. I do urge you to try this at home. Often.

I generally agree with you that Brian's "tap" might have been a second (or more) concussion. BUT: you're forgetting about mass. F=MA

A baseball is 5.11 ounces. Brian's bat might be 31 oz.

The range of motion involved in hitting your helmit with your bat is so limited, the weight differential is irrelevant. The distance traveled would be less than 2 ft. You simply couldn't generate enough speed over that short a distance. I have actually done this and I know this to be true.

You're right, it was Gil Meche.

He was an extremely rare case, though. That's why you even remember him. Most players who are hurt or completely ineffective will continue to collect their paychecks.

And I support them in doing so. That's the contract - that's the deal. There's no need to fall on your sword. Why? So Peter can go sign a couple more Gregg's? It's not his fault that the front office made that deal. Sometimes the breaks go for ownership, sometimes for players.

I seriously doubt that Brian isn't dying to get out there and play again. The guy lives and breathes baseball from everything I've heard. I hope they can keep him around in some capacity - instructor, coach, team trombonist.

I mean the guy did swing a bat professionally. I've seen 'roiders break bats over their knee.

I remember seeing him do it. He held the bat at belt level and then brought it up. It didn't travel far, and Roberts was neither a Ninja, or on 'roids at the time. It wasn't that hard. Again I urge everyone who has a problem with this, to try it at home.

Rumor has it that a Roberts buyout is in the works.... Andino impressed me today w/hustle and gleam in his eye about being the "guy" @ 2nd. Still remember Buck walking him and his sideways oversize hat to the equipment room, saying "lets get you one that fits!!" Kid's growing up!

    • Gotta like the BB:K ratio and there's hope in the adage of "doubles become HRs".
    • Heston missed a 2-0 meatball, but crushed the next pitch for a single. He also had a nice sliding catch in the field. We’re facing a string of lefties, and we have some off days, so he might only start 2 times in the next 9 days because of that.  It is what it is. No knock on big Heston. He’s a part of our future. We’re just playing winning baseball and need to win each game.
    • Your conspiracy theories against teams just screwing over the millionaire ball players are pretty epic. No one is going to hold a IL stint for a few weeks in his 2nd season against him in anything. This line of thinking is so over the the top its not funny. Every pitcher has soreness after starts. Maybe Grayson has had a little extra and they just want to calm down the soreness and the fact that they need a spot in the rotation while coming up against "weaker" opponents is a good time to get him settled down, and keep him fresher for later in the year. Why do you think Grayson or anyone would have a problem with that line of thinking? A "phantom" IL stint is a Jimenez pothole IL stint where the pitcher can't be removed from the active roster but is pitching so poorly that they just want to reset him a bit and get a pitcher on the roster that can help. At the end of the day, what we all need to hope is this is just a cautionary IL stint to calm down some shoulder soreness and not anything more.
    • For most of baseball history there were weird, idiosyncratic things players did and for the most part they were left alone. Because whatever strange stance, windup, delivery or technique that they had, they were in the majors. Clearly it was working. HOFer Al Simmons was known as Bucketfoot Al because he stepped towards 3rd when batting. If the internet had existed in 1924, the first time he went into a slump the screaming and gnashing of teeth would have been unrelenting. Send this idiot back to the minors, he's never going to hit like that against real pitchers!  Mel Ott, another HOFer, 2nd guy to get to 500 homers, had a leg kick that puts Holliday to shame. Disco Dan Ford batted with his back to the pitcher. He was so oddly situated in the box that teams would play him (a RHH) like a left-handed pull hitter. Luis Tiant had that windup that ended up with his back to the batter in mid-delivery. The internet coaches would have savaged all of them at the first 3-game slump. I'm half convinced that all those kind of things mostly disappeared just to stop the wailing from the peanut gallery.
    • Adley had the most balls called strikes on him last year in the MLB. Leaving it up to the umps didn’t work last year.
    • Today on a 1 o’clock game the lowest ticket price is 24$. If I wanted to take my son,  48$ nose bleed seat, 30$ parking, 30$ on 2 meals, 30$ 2 beers. We will have 20,000 fans if we are lucky and 5000 will be Yankees fans.
