Why do people take pleasure in ripping on this guy? Before his injuries he was one of the most beloved players in Baltimore. Yes, he hasn't earned his keep during this contract. Does that make him a bad guy where people want to be correct and that he won't have good numbers? I don't get it.

1. He cheated (PED's)

2. He signed a large contract.

3. He injured himself in a non baseball temper tantrum (steroid rage??)

4. He returned no value for the large 4 year contract.

5. He returned to his starting position supplanting a younger and more talented (IMHO) player based on his past success that is now over 4 years ago.

6. He has never played on a winning team and whether that is a jinx or a voodoo curse the Orioles are going to go under .500 since his return, when they were playing .565 ball without him.

The anti-BRob campaign has made some pretty odd arguments. If roberts put up a 1.000 OPS but most of those hits came in orioles losses or when the bases were empty, they would absolutely keep on him. Note the so-called B-Rob effect referenced in this very thread.

Well then maybe I am not really one of his critics although I got into a huge fight this offseason because I thought he'd be terrible and his fans didn't like that, BUT, if he had a 1.000 OPS, I'd be pretty ecstatic. I'm not even sure how you could OPS 1.000 and not have some of those at-bats matter.

There's a difference between being a critic and having an agenda you refuse to deviate from. I'm a Roberts critic, I wish we'd give Flaherty the job vs RHP and start Roberts vs LHP - but if Roberts OPS is 1.000 from here on out I'll build a statue to Brian Roberts in my front yard and polish it with a toothbrush daily. There are some posters on here that never change their tune - but I think for the most part posters here have a strong take - but if the evidence mounts to persuade them their take is wrong - they are more than happy to revise their opinion. Anyone adult taking time from their day to post on an Orioles message board in the end wants what's best for the team - and Brian Roberts OPSing 1.000 would be very good for the team indeed.

Only problem with starting Brob vs lefties is the fact that he is a much weaker righthanded hitter. I've often thought Brian should only bat leftie. Man can he swing it from the left side. He does look much better this year batting rightie though.

In short, frustration over the unpredictability of his recovery time coupled with the amount of budget taken up by his contract and unable to be used elsewhere. I totally get that and have shared the frustration at times. The vocal and strident animosity some posters have for him baffles me however, it's way out of scale. He's given a lot to the organization and deserves to be considered in a much better light. I'm happy to see him having some success and hope it continues.

Which one looks closer to reality? I'm glad Roberts is hitting well, and I hope he continues to do so, but I think we'll see him regress back to the player he is at this stage in his career soon enough. BTW, his lack of range last night might have cost us. He was playing up the middle and the ball was not really hit that hard. Both Flaherty and Casilla probably knocks that down. The Orioles may still have lost on the next play but goes to show that his lack of range hurts the team at times.
